Huge majority of debate watchers say Harris took home the victory, CNN poll finds

An overwhelming majority of debate watchers said they thought Vice President Kamala Harris outperformed former President Trump in Tuesday night’s debate, according to a CNN poll. The survey respondents went into Tuesday night’s debate split, with 50% saying they expected Trump to win and 50% saying they expected a Harris victory. By the end of the night, however, 63% said Harris came out on top, compared to 37% for Trump. Broken down by candidate, 96% of Harris’ supporters said they thought she won, while 69% of Trump supporters said the former president won. CNN’s poll was conducted via text message, surveying 605 registered voters who said they watched Tuesday night’s debate. The poll advertises a margin of error of 5.3%. TRUMP SAYS PROJECT 2025 ‘GOES WAY TOO FAR’ WITH ABORTION RESTRICTIONS Trump allies have defended the former president’s performance at the Pennsylvania debate. Many have also criticized the ABC News debate moderators, David Muir and Linsey Davis. JD VANCE VOWS TRUMP WOULD NOT IMPOSE FEDERAL ABORTION BAN, VETO IT IF COMES ACROSS DESK “President Trump delivered a powerful America First message directly to the American people focusing on reining in inflation and strengthening our economy, securing our border, and peace-through-strength foreign policy,” House GOP Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., said in a statement at the tail end of the debate. “The ABC moderators were not journalists, they were pro-Kamala activists who baselessly attacked President Trump leading to a 3 on 1 debate, while allowing Kamala to lie repeatedly. President Trump won overwhelmingly and will win again on Election Day,” she added. Trump’s running mate, Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio, similarly told Fox News host Sean Hannity, “The moderators didn’t do their job, but President Trump did do his job.” ABC’S LINSEY DAVIS RAISES EYEBROWS WITH ABORTION FACT-CHECK AGAINST TRUMP: ‘COMPLETELY INTERJECTS HERSELF’ Trump himself said the debate was “three against one” as the moderators sided with Harris on a number of issues. Fox News host Sean Hannity asked Trump about reports Harris’ campaign wants a second debate in October, and whether he would be open to it. Fox News has extended a formal invitation to both the Trump and Harris campaigns for a second debate next month. “She wants it because she lost,” Trump responded. “I don’t know. I have to think about it. But if you won the debate, I sort of think maybe I shouldn’t do it. Why should I do another debate? She immediately said we want another debate. That’s… you know what happens when you’re a prizefighter, and you lose? You immediately want a new fight.” Fox News’ Elizabeth Elkind contributed to this report

Trump says Taylor Swift endorsing Harris was ‘just a question of time’

Trump says Taylor Swift endorsing Harris was ‘just a question of time’

Former President Donald Trump is not surprised by pop superstar Taylor Swift’s endorsement of Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris. Trump claimed the singer was always going to endorse the Democratic Party during a call-in to “Fox & Friends” on Wednesday morning. “It was just a question of time. She couldn’t […] possibly endorse Biden. You look at Biden, you couldn’t possibly endorse him,” Trump said, clarifying that he is “not a Taylor Swift fan.” TAYLOR SWIFT ENDORSES KAMALA HARRIS FOR PRESIDENT AFTER DEBATE: ‘I’VE MADE MY CHOICE’ “But she’s a very liberal person. She seems to always endorse a Democrat. And she’ll probably pay a price for it […] in the marketplace.” Swift endorsed Kamala Harris for president just minutes after the Democratic nominee’s presidential debate against her Republican opponent, Donald Trump.  Writing on Instagram, the pop star said she will be voting for Harris because, “she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them.” TAYLOR SWIFT, BRITTANY MAHOMES HUG IT OUT AT US OPEN, HIT THE TOWN FOR DOUBLE DATE AMID TRUMP CONTROVERSY Trump quipped during his “Fox & Friends” call-in that he “actually like[s] Mrs. Mahomes much better,” referring to Brittany Mahomes, the wife of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. “She’s a big Trump fan,” Trump said. Mahomes first indicated her support for Trump on Aug. 13, when she liked Trump’s Instagram post that outlined the “2024 GOP platform.” The swimsuit model then appeared to respond to criticism on her Instagram Stories. “I mean honestly, To be a hater as an adult, you have to have some deep-rooted issues you refuse to heal from childhood,” she wrote on Instagram Stories after receiving criticism for her support. “There’s no reason your brain is fully developed and you hate to see others doing well.” Swift was with Travis Kelce and the Mahomes family at Flushing Meadows to watch the U.S. Open. Swift and Brittany Mahomes were snapped embracing each other lovingly. Fox News Digital’s Ryan Gaydos and Bradford Betz contributed to this report.

Focus group reacts to Donald Trump’s claim that Ukraine war is ‘dying to be settled’

Voters in Fox News’ focus group reactions varied across Republican, Democratic and Independent lines when former President Donald Trump talked about the Russia-Ukraine war on Tuesday night.  “I want the war to stop. I want to save lives that are being uselessly killed by the millions. It’s the millions. It’s so much worse than the numbers that you’re getting, which are fake numbers. Look, we’re in for $250 billion or more because they don’t ask Europe, which is a much bigger beneficiary to getting this thing done than we are,” Trump said. Independent and Republican voters’ reactions in Fox’s dial group shot up during Trump’s response regarding Europe’s role in the war, while Democrat approval dipped. ABC DEBATE MODERATORS SPARK FURY FOR AGGRESSIVE FACT-CHECKING OF TRUMP, EASY TREATMENT OF HARRIS “They respect me. They don’t respect Biden,” Trump said moments later. “How would you respect him? Why? For what reason? He hasn’t even made a phone call in two years to Putin, hasn’t spoken to anybody. They don’t even try and get it.” ABC DEBATE MODERATOR ACCUSED OF ONLY FACT-CHECKING ONE CANDIDATE “That is a war that’s dying to be settled. I will get it settled before I even become president … That war would have never happened. And in fact, when I saw Putin after I left, unfortunately left because our country has gone to hell. But after I left, when I saw him building up soldiers, he did it.” During Trump’s remarks, Republican and Democratic support increased as he talked about settling the war, while support among Independents decreased. Independent and Republican approval again spiked when Trump said, “And now you have millions of people dead, and it’s only getting worse. And it could lead to World War III … We’re playing with World War III.” FOX NEWS MEDIA PROPOSES SECOND DEBATE MODERATED BY MARTHA MACCALLUM, BRET BAIER Independent and Republican approval continued to rise as Trump blasted President Biden, saying “we have a president who doesn’t know if he’s alive.”

Focus group reacts to Trump saying he wanted to send Harris a ‘MAGA hat’ for copying his policies

Focus group reacts to Trump saying he wanted to send Harris a ‘MAGA hat’ for copying his policies

Voters from across party lines in Fox News’ focus group reacted in real time to former President Trump’s jab at Vice PresidentHarris for allegedly copying some of his platform policies. “Everything that she believed three years ago and four years ago is out the window. She’s going to my philosophy now,” Trump said.  “In fact, I was going to send her a ‘MAGA’ hat. She’s going to my philosophy. But if she ever got elected, she will change it, and it will be the end of our country,” he added. “She’s a Marxist. Everybody knows she’s a Marxist. Her father’s a Marxist professor in economics, and he taught her well.”  Republican voters’ approval shot up during Trump’s remarks, while Independent support increased slightly, and Democrat voters’ approval dipped, according to the Fox News dial.  Harris was under fire from critics and conservatives last month for echoing former President Trump’s campaign vow to not tax service industry employees’ tips after the Biden-Harris administration rolled out a plan to crack down on tips for people who work in the service industry. TRUMP FACT CHECKS HARRIS ON CHARLOTTESVILLE RIOT ACCUSATION: ‘DEBUNKED’ The copycat dig Tuesday night came after Harris had attacked Trump’s trade policies with China.  “He invited trade wars. You want to talk about his deal with China. What he ended up doing is under Donald Trump’s presidency, he ended up selling American chips to China to help them improve and modernize their military. Basically sold us out,” Harris said. “When a policy about China should be in making sure the United States of America wins the competition for the 21st century.” TOP 5 MOMENTS DURING TRUMP-HARRIS PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE: ‘I’M TALKING NOW’ Harris said that “means focusing on the details of what that requires, focusing on relationships with our allies, focusing on investing in American-based technology so that we win the race on AI, on quantum computing, focusing on what we need to do to support America’s workforce so that we don’t end up having – on the short end of the stick in terms of workers’ rights.”  “But what Donald Trump did, let’s talk about this with COVID, is he actually thanked President Xi for what he did during COVID. Look at his tweet. ‘Thank you, President Xi, exclamation point,’” Harris added. “When we know that Xi was responsible for lacking and not giving us transparency about the origins of COVID.”  “First of all, they bought the chips from Taiwan. We hardly make chips anymore because of philosophies like they have, and policies like they have. I don’t say her because she has no policy,” Trump responded.  Former independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., who endorsed Trump weeks ago, chimed in on X about the exchange – but regarding what Harris said of COVID origins.  “VP Harris sounds like she just admitted the Covid virus originated in a lab. That was one of the ‘conspiracy theories’ the Biden-Harris administration censored on the Internet,” Kennedy wrote.  Fox News Digital’s Emma Colton contributed to this report.

Harris surprises social media by saying she’s a gun owner

Harris surprises social media by saying she’s a gun owner

Democratic presidential candidate Vice President Harris surprised social media Tuesday night by claiming on the debate stage that she and running mate Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz are gun owners.  In Philadelphia Tuesday night, Republican presidential candidate former President Trump attempted to highlight how Harris has distanced herself from prior far-left stances since becoming the nominee. “She has a plan to defund the police. She has a plan to confiscate everybody’s gun. She planned to allow fracking in Pennsylvania or anywhere else,” Trump said. “That’s what her plan is, until just recently.” In response later, however, Harris shot back – and revealed she and Walz own guns.  TOP 5 MOMENTS DURING TRUMP-HARRIS PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE: ‘I’M TALKING NOW’ “I’ve made very clear my position on fracking and then this business about taking everyone’s guns away,” Harris said. “Tim Walz and I are both gun owners. We’re not taking anybody’s guns away. So stop with the continuous lying about this stuff.”  Fox News Digital reached out to the Harris campaign on Wednesday asking for details on whether Harris still owns a gun and if so, what kind, where she keeps it and when was the last time she went shooting.  The Harris campaign responded by citing CNN’s previous reporting from 2019.  At the time, a Harris campaign aide told CNN that Harris owned a hand gun that was purchased “years ago” which she keeps locked away as a responsible gun owner.  “Kamala Harris and I are both gun owners,” Walz wrote on X after the debate. “We’re not going to take away your Second Amendment rights — we’re going to prevent your kids from getting shot at school.” Harris’ gun ownership revelation shocked social media users, many of whom shared past clips of Harris’ TV appearances on the campaign trail in 2019 voicing support for a mandatory gun buyback program.  “Harris is now claiming that her and Tim Walz are gun owners and she isn’t going to take guns away from anyone which we all know is a lie,” Wendy Patterson wrote to her more than 193,300 followers on X. “She also says that she’s for fracking which we all know is a lie.” “Since when is Kamala Harris a gun owner?? When has she talked about that?” another X user, Arynne Wexler, wrote to her more than 28,400 followers. VOTER SLAMS HARRIS FOR ‘RACE BAITING’ AND ‘FEAR MONGERING’ DURING DEBATE While campaigning for president in 2019, then-Senator Harris called for banning assault weapons and universal background checks while stressing the need for stricter gun control laws.  “I am a gun owner, and I own a gun for probably the reason a lot of people do – for personal safety,” Harris, who previously served as San Francisco district attorney and California attorney general, said in August 2019, according to CNN. “I was a career prosecutor.” While taking questions from college students in the audience of “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” four years ago, one student asked Harris if she believes in the mandatory buybacks of assault weapons and “how does that idea not go against fundamentally the Second Amendment?” “I do believe that we need to do buybacks,” Harris said. “First of all, let’s be clear about what assault weapons are. They have been designed to kill a lot of human beings quickly. They are weapons of war with no place on the streets of a civil society. I’ve seen assault weapons kill babies and police officers.”  CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP “So one, I’ll tell you when elected president, if the United States Congress continues to fail to have the courage to do something about this, I’m prepared to take executive action and put in place a ban on the importation of assault rifles into our country,” she said. ‘But we still have to deal with the over 2 million assault weapons that are currently in the streets of America. And so a buyback program is a good idea.”

Harris leads in Virginia, a state Trump is aiming to flip: poll

Harris leads in Virginia, a state Trump is aiming to flip: poll

Vice President Kamala Harris is leading former President Donald Trump by eight percentage points among likely voters in Virginia, a state the Trump campaign has been looking to flip red after losing in 2016 and 2020. The latest Washington Post-Schar School poll, released Tuesday, before the two candidates debated in Philadelphia, showed Harris leading Trump by 50% to 42% in the Old Dominion State with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points. The poll underscores a significant turnaround to the top of the Democratic ticket in Virginia since Harris dramatically replaced President Biden as her party’s nominee.  FOX NEWS POLL: HARRIS CLOSES GAP WITH TRUMP IN SUN BELT STATES A Fox News poll in June had Biden and Trump in a dead heat. Biden swept Virginia in 2020 by more than 10 points. Hillary Clinton beat Trump by more than five points there in 2016 – although Trump went on to win the presidency. No Republican presidential candidate has won Virginia since former President George W. Bush’s re-election in 2004. The GOP has been making progress in the state, with the 2021 election of Gov. Glenn Youngkin as the first Republican to be elected to the governorship since 2009 and further success in the 2022 midterms and the state’s 2023 off-year elections. Mark Rozell, dean of the Schar School of Policy and Government at George Mason University, said the poll also shows that Trump does not have a significant lead on any issue measured in this survey. “Most notable not only is the size of Harris’s lead, but that Trump does not have any issue advantage, unlike national polls in which he enjoys some advantage on the economy, immigration and fighting crime,” Rozell told The Washington Post. “Trump’s path to the presidency therefore does not run through Virginia.” FOX NEWS POLL: NEW MATCHUP, SAME RESULT — TRUMP BESTS HARRIS BY ONE POINT Fox News Digital reached out to the Trump campaign for a comment but did not receive a response.  The poll, which was conducted from Sept. 4 through Sept. 8, found 55% of female Virginia voters said they would vote for Harris, compared to 37% for Trump.  Harris performed well among Black Virginia voters, garnering 73 percent of their support.  Additionally, likely White voters prefer Trump at 50% to 43% for Harris. White likely voters with a college degree swing heavily to Harris at 57% compared to 36% for Trump, while White voters without college degrees support Trump by 64% to 29%. Harris polled best in the close-in Washington, D.C., suburbs, 60%, Northern Virginia exurbs, 56%, and in the Richmond area, 55%. Trump’s support is strongest in the more rural central and western parts of Virginia, 60%, while the Tidewater region, in Eastern Virginia, tips toward Harris at 49% compared to 42% for Trump.  In terms of favorability, 53% of Virginians have an unfavorable impression of the former president while 39% are favorable. Harris is net popular with 49% favorable and 42% unfavorable. The poll was conducted among a random sample of 1,005 registered voters in Virginia with 65% reached by live callers on cellphones, 14% on landlines and 21% via cellphone text to-web.  The pool of respondents was made up of 31% who say they think of themselves as Democrats compared to 28% of Republicans. Independents accounted for 30% of participants.
