Rep. Ed Case wins Dem primary, setting up for 6th full term in deep blue Hawaii

Rep. Ed Case wins Dem primary, setting up for 6th full term in deep blue Hawaii

Moderate Democratic Rep. Ed Case, D-Hawaii, fended off a primary challenger in the state’s elections Saturday, setting himself up for a likely sixth full term in the House of Representatives. Case is running for the seat in Hawaii’s 1st Congressional District, which he’s held since winning in the 2018 midterm elections. He first came to Congress as a representative for the island’s 2nd Congressional District, winning a special election to fill the seat of Rep. Patsy Mink, who died of pneumonia in 2002. HAVE BATTLEGROUNDS SHIFTED WITH HARRIS AT TOP OF TICKET? Case left the House of Representatives in January 2007 and returned in January 2019, representing his current district. He made headlines just last month as one of dozens of House Democrats who called on President Biden to drop out of the 2024 presidential race, which Biden did later that month. In a July 11 statement, Case maintained that his decision only came from concerns about the 81-year-old leader’s ability to carry out another four-year term. “This has nothing to do with his character and record,” Case said at the time. “If it did, there would be no decision to make.” CRUCIAL SOUTHWESTERN BATTLEGROUND HOLDS SENATE, HOUSE PRIMARIES Case is no stranger to crowded primary elections, besting a field of 44 candidates to replace Mink for her final two months in office in 2002. He also won a seven-way primary for his current seat in 2018. This time, however, he faced just one primary challenger, Cecil Hale, who does not appear to have disclosed campaign finance data to the Federal Election Commission. Case, by contrast, raised nearly $120,000 in individual contributions and ended the primary cycle with almost $260,000 cash on hand. 18 DAYS: KAMALA HARRIS HAS NOT HELD A PRESS CONFERENCE SINCE EMERGING AS PRESUMPTIVE DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE Hawaii only has two congressional districts, both represented by Democrats, and both of its senators are also Democrats. It’s a safe blue stronghold for the left despite pervasive issues like the high cost of living, which has traditionally been a potent political weapon for Republicans in other parts of the country. Republican Patrick Largey is running unopposed for the Republican nomination to challenge Case in November.

Mazie Hirono wins Hawaii Senate primary, setting Dems up for much-needed November win

Mazie Hirono wins Hawaii Senate primary, setting Dems up for much-needed November win

Sen. Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii, easily won her primary race on Saturday, setting Democrats up for a likely victory in November. She was up against Clyde Lewman, a wood products salesman, and Ron Curtis, a retired engineer.  Curtis was last up against Hirono in 2018 as the Republican nominee for her Senate seat. He lost to the incumbent Democrat by about 29% to 71%.  PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGNS ‘INVISIBLE’ IN CRITICAL SWING STATE OF MICHIGAN: REPORT He also challenged Rep. Ed Case, D-Hawaii, for his House seat in 2020, but lost by similar margins. Hirono, a progressive, is seeking a third six-year term representing the majority-left-wing island state. The Japan-born U.S. senator is the favorite to win Hawaii’s general election later this year. But her victory will be much welcomed among Democrats as they fight what could be an uphill battle to keep their razor-thin majority in the Senate. ‘NEVER TRUMPERS’ COALESCE BEHIND DEM TICKET IN REPUBLICANS FOR HARRIS CAMPAIGN Her 2024 campaign brought in more than $3 million in individual donations, according to campaign finance data. The Federal Election Commission site did not have records of her opponents’ fundraising. Hirono was the lieutenant governor of Hawaii before being elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where she served three terms prior to her 2012 run for Senate. Hawaii’s congressional delegation, two senators and two House members, is fully Democratic. KEY PRIMARIES IN 4 STATES ON TUESDAY TO SET TABLE FOR NOVEMBER SENATE, HOUSE SHOWDOWNS The state’s governor’s office and both houses of its state legislature are also controlled by Democrats. Democrats are likely to pad their numbers with Hirono’s expected victory in November in a Senate map where they’re at risk of losing critical races elsewhere, including ruby-red West Virginia.

Trump accuses Harris of ‘stealing’ his no tax on tips promise after her campus rally in Las Vegas

Vice President Kamala Harris cloned former President Trump’s pledge to eliminate federal taxes on tips paid to workers in restaurants, bars, hotels and others in the service industry. At a rally on the campus of the University of Nevada at Las Vegas on Saturday evening, Harris pledged to fight for “working families of Americans.” “When I was attorney general of California, we worked together to crack down on wage theft,” she said. “When I was a United States senator, we fought together for paid family leave and medical leave.” LAS VEGAS RIDESHARE DRIVERS LAUD TRUMP’S ‘AWESOME’ NO-TAX-TIPS PLAN AS HARRIS HOLDS RALLY ACROSS TOWN Harris, who received the endorsement of the Culinary Workers Union Local 226, promised the droves of service and hospitality workers in Sin City to “eliminate taxes on tips.” “And earlier this year, right here in Vegas, we celebrated your historic contract win. And it is my promise to everyone here when I am president, we will continue our fight for the working families of America,” Harris said. “Including to raise the minimum wage. And eliminate taxes on tips for service and hospitality workers.” Trump was quick to respond on social media, putting Harris on blast for “stealing” his policy. “Kamala Harris, whose “Honeymoon” period is ENDING, and is starting to get hammered in the Polls, just copied my NO TAXES ON TIPS Policy,” he wrote in a Truth Social post. NORQUIST: ALL THE REASONS TRUMP’S TAX-FREE TIPS PLAN IS BRILLIANT “The difference is, she won’t do it, she just wants it for Political Purposes! This was a TRUMP idea – She has no ideas, she can only steal from me,” he said. “Remember, Kamala has proposed the LARGEST TAX INCREASE IN HISTORY – It won’t happen. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!” Kamala’s policy introduction came after Trump pledged the same in June during a visit to Las Vegas.
