Former Trump primary rival Nikki Haley in Republican convention spotlight

Former Trump primary rival Nikki Haley in Republican convention spotlight

MILWAUKEE – One day after Donald Trump was formally nominated as the GOP’s 2024 presidential nominee and named Sen. JD Vance of Ohio as his running mate, Trump’s final rival during the presidential primaries takes center stage at the Republican National Convention. Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, who served as U.N. ambassador in the Trump administration, will speak at the convention on Tuesday, multiple sources familiar with the decision confirmed to Fox News over the weekend. As of last week, Haley wasn’t invited to speak at the convention and wasn’t planning on attending the four-day confab, which is being held in the largest city of swing state Wisconsin. But following Saturday’s attempted assassination attempt on Trump at a rally in western Pennsylvania, where the former president was visibly bloodied after a bullet grazed his ear and where one spectator was killed and two others critically injured, the GOP quickly united around their standard-bearer. And as part of that push for unity, Haley was invited to speak at the convention. TRUMP ANNOUNCES JD VANCE AS HIS 2024 RUNNING MATE  A source with knowledge of Haley’s speech told Fox News that she’ll “address voters who are uncertain about voting for President Trump and make the case for why she is voting for him.” Haley launched her presidential campaign in February last year, becoming the first major candidate to challenge Trump, who had announced his candidacy three months earlier. She was the final rival to Trump, battling the former president in a contentious two-candidate showdown from the New Hampshire primary in late January through Super Tuesday in early March. LIVE UPDATES: REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION Haley announced that she was suspending her White House campaign on March 6, the day after Trump swept 14 of 15 GOP nominating contests on Super Tuesday. As she departed the race, Haley made it clear that she intended to keep speaking out. And Haley continued to grab up to 20% of the vote in Republican presidential primaries in the months after she dropped out. In late May, in her first public comments since announcing the end of her 2024 campaign, Haley said she would vote for Trump. Haley won a total of 97 delegates during the Republican presidential primaries. And last week, Haley released all of her delegates and urged them to support Trump. Asked last week in an interview with Fox News’ Brian Kilmeade about Haley, Trump said “there was a lot of bad blood there, and she stayed too long.” Pointing to another former nomination rival, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who left the race three days ahead of the New Hampshire primary, Trump said, “DeSantis left right after Iowa. She should have left right after Iowa.” Get the latest updates from the 2024 campaign trail, exclusive interviews and more at our Fox News Digital election hub.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to Expelling Bob Menendez from the Senate

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to Expelling Bob Menendez from the Senate

After a jury found Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., guilty on 16 counts during a nine-week corruption trial, lawmakers in the Senate and from his state of New Jersey have urged him to resign. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., was one of the first to respond to the verdict on Tuesday, requesting his fellow Democrat to resign. “In light of this guilty verdict, Senator Menendez must now do what is right for his constituents, the Senate, and our country, and resign,” he said in a statement. A smaller group noted that expulsion may be necessary should Menendez refuse to comply with the request of his colleagues.  SCHUMER CALLS FOR DEMOCRAT MENENDEZ’S RESIGNATION AFTER GUILTY VERDICT In his own call for the senator’s resignation, Gov. Phil Murphy, D-N.J., said the Senate should “vote to expel him” if he doesn’t step down.  The Senate has only expelled 15 of its members in U.S. history. In fact, the last was Sen. Jesse Bright, D-Ind., in 1862.  This is why a number of lawmakers are calling on Menendez to resign rather than be expelled.  The reason? It ain’t easy. Here’s the process. A senator could draw up a resolution to expel Menendez. The Constitution requires a two-thirds vote to expel. But it does not hit the floor right away. Even if someone brought up a resolution, it could be referred immediately to the Ethics Committee. That could bottle things up for a while as the Ethics panel investigates. SEN MENENDEZ FACES UP TO 200 YEARS IN PRISON AFTER GUILTY VERDICT IN FEDERAL CORRUPTION TRIAL However, Menendez has already been convicted. So, the Ethics Committee could just send out its “report” on the conduct of Menendez quickly and send the measure to the floor.  If the resolution to expel gets locked up in committee, senators could try to pry it loose via a “motion to discharge.” That is more complicated. But it may work in this instance.  TOP DEM REPORTEDLY DOESN’T THINK HIS PARTY WILL WIN WITH BIDEN AT THE HELM Regardless, the Senate must vote to “proceed” to the expulsion resolution. That requires a simple majority. There is no filibuster/cloture on the front end. The Senate can then debate the expulsion question for as long as necessary. TOP DEM PLOTS TYING SCOTUS FUNDING TO ‘ENFORCEABLE’ ETHICS CODE AMID THOMAS, ALITO CONTROVERSIES However, if requested, the Senate may need to stave off a filibuster. So, the Senate may need to file “cloture” to overcome the filibuster on the expulsion of Menendez. That takes 60 yea votes. If the Senate breaks the filibuster, it can then vote on the expulsion resolution itself. That requires a two-thirds vote. It’s notable that the late Sen. Harrison Williams, D-N.J., and former Sen. Bob Packwood, R-Ore., faced potential expulsion votes. But both resigned before the Senate could cobble together the votes to kick them out. It’s also possible that someone could just prep a resolution to expel – and conceivably try to bypass the Ethics Committee and put the issue on the floor right away. But that would require the blessing of all 100 senators. Menendez is still a senator. So, it’s likely he and others might object or try to block it.

Biden claims he is on form and doesn’t need notes or teleprompters: ‘I’m on the horse’

Biden claims he is on form and doesn’t need notes or teleprompters: ‘I’m on the horse’

President Biden defied his critics and claimed during an interview on Monday that he is in great form and doesn’t need any help with his speeches – not from notes or a teleprompter. “I’m on the horse,” Biden angrily insisted when NBC’s Lester Holt asked if Biden would look to “get back on the horse” ahead of a second debate with Donald Trump in September. “I’ve done 22 major events and thousands of people. Overwhelming crowds. A lot happening. I’m on the horse.”  “What I’m doing is going out and demonstrating to the American people that I have command of all my faculties, that I don’t need notes, I don’t need teleprompters,” Biden continued. “I can go out and answer any questions at all, and I stood there when NATO was in town, stood there for an hour and answered questions.”  Biden remains under pressure from many within his party to step aside and allow another candidate to face Trump in November following what most have labeled a disastrous presidential debate last month.  BIDEN INSISTS TRUMP ‘DIVIDING THE COUNTRY’ AMID CALLS FOR UNITY AND LOWERING ‘TEMPERATURE’ IN POLITICS Many found Biden’s performance during the debate indicative of a man who, in the next four years, might struggle as age catches up with him: A voter from Georgia told CNN’s John King that she didn’t “feel comfortable with Biden’s age” or with “Trump’s mouth.”  Holt confronted Biden with these concerns, asking if Biden worried that he might suffer “another performance … on that level?”  BIDEN REVEALS WHAT HE SAID TO TRUMP ON PHONE CALL AFTER ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT Biden dismissed the concern, saying in a mumbled whisper, “I don’t plan on having another performance on that level.”  The candidates are next scheduled to debate in September, and Biden affirmed he would participate, but he refused to be drawn on seeking another debate in the meantime, dodging the suggestion that Trump offered a third debate as a chance for Biden to “redeem” himself.  BIDEN ADMITS ‘BULL’S-EYE’ COMMENT ABOUT TRUMP WAS A ‘MISTAKE’ AFTER ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., has privately encouraged lawmakers to continue pressuring Biden to reconsider his bid for re-election even as she publicly backs him to beat Trump, according to The Hill. The party remains at odds about whether they can convince Biden to step down from the ticket, but some have admitted that those efforts must take a “back seat” following the attempt on Trump’s life, arguing that the party needed to focus on security and unifying language as the country tries to make sense of what happened.

Secret Service increased Trump’s protection after Iranian plot to assassinate him

Secret Service increased Trump’s protection after Iranian plot to assassinate him

The Department of Homeland Security has received intelligence from a human source on an Iranian plot to assassinate former President Trump, Fox News has been told by two federal law enforcement sources.  The development level of the plot is unclear. CNN first reported that there has been an increase in Secret Service protection for Trump in recent weeks because of this intelligence. DHS and Secret Service have increasingly been concerned about Trump holding outdoor events, Fox News is told.  The Iranian plot is reportedly not connected in any way at this point to the assassination attempt on Trump in Pennsylvania carried out by Thomas Crooks. The agencies have expressed concerns to Trump’s campaign about the Iranian plot. Since the killing of Iranian leader Qasem Soleimani in January 2020, Trump has been an increased target, but this specific threat has developed over the past few days. This is a breaking news report.
