Who is Trump’s running mate JD Vance?

Who is Trump’s running mate JD Vance?

Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio, will run alongside former President Donald Trump in 2024 after being chosen as his vice presidential running mate on the Republican ticket. Vance, 39, was first elected to the Ohio Senate in the 2022 midterms, defeating Democrat Rep. Tim Ryan for the seat. Before entering the political scene, Vance joined the Marine Corps and served in the Iraq War. Shortly after, he graduated from Ohio State University and Yale Law School. Vance rose to prominence after publishing a bestselling memoir-turned Netflix film, titled “Hillbilly Elegy,” a book about American values and his Appalachian upbringing. TRUMP ANNOUNCES OHIO SEN JD VANCE AS HIS 2024 RUNNING MATE In 2019, Vance started the venture capitalist firm Narya Capital in Ohio with the backing of former PayPal CEO and GOP megadonor Peter Thiel. Days before revealing the Ohio Senator as his 2024 running mate, Trump likened Vance to former President Abraham Lincoln when asked about his facial hair, telling Fox News’ Brian Kilmeade “he looks good… He looks like a young Abraham Lincoln.” TRUMP LIKENS POSSIBLE VP PICK TO ‘YOUNG ABRAHAM LINCOLN’ FOR ONE SURPRISING REASON The former president made the highly-anticipated announcement via Truth Social just minutes after the Republican National Convention (RNC) was gaveled in Monday. “After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the Great State of Ohio,” Trump wrote.  “J.D. honorably served our Country in the Marine Corps, graduated from Ohio State University in two years, Summa Cum Laude, and is a Yale Law School Graduate, where he was Editor of The Yale Law Journal, and President of the Yale Law Veterans Association. J.D.’s book, “Hillbilly Elegy,” became a Major Best Seller and Movie, as it championed the hardworking men and women of our Country. J.D. has had a very successful business career in Technology and Finance, and now, during the Campaign, will be strongly focused on the people he fought so brilliantly for, the American Workers and Farmers in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Minnesota, and far beyond….,” Trump said.

FBI has gained access to Thomas Matthew Crooks’ phone in Trump assassination attempt

FBI has gained access to Thomas Matthew Crooks’ phone in Trump assassination attempt

The FBI announced they have successfully gained access to the phone belonging to Thomas Matthew Crooks, the would-be assassin who opened fire on former President Trump at his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday.  “FBI technical specialists successfully gained access to Thomas Matthew Crooks’ phone, and they continue to analyze his electronic devices,” the agency wrote in a press release.  Law enforcement sources with knowledge of the situation tell Fox News the weapon Crooks used, a DPMS AR-15 5.56, is now at the FBI’s forensic labs in Quantico, Virginia, along with his phone, laptop and at least one Improvised Explosive Device from his car. The FBI finished its search of Crooks’ home and vehicle. A little more than a dozen guns were found in the home. Crooks’ family is still cooperating with the FBI, Fox News has confirmed.  ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT ON TRUMP AT PENNSYLVANIA RALLY LEAVES 2 HURT, 2 DEAD, INCLUDING SHOOTER The FBI said it conducted nearly 100 interviews of law enforcement personnel, event attendees and other witnesses. It has also received hundreds of digital media tips, which include photos and videos taken at the scene. The agency began its investigation into Crooks and the shooting shortly after the Saturday attack. Agents went to Crooks’ home and the home of his parents on Sunday and Monday. They are investigating the incident as an assassination attempt and possible domestic terrorism. Trump broke his silence on the assassination attempt on Monday, saying he is alive “by luck or by God.” “I’m not supposed to be here, I’m supposed to be dead,” Trump told the New York Post. “I’m supposed to be dead.” “The doctor at the hospital said he never saw anything like this, he called it a miracle,” Trump also told the newspaper onboard his private plane while heading to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for this week’s Republican National Convention. “By luck or by God, many people are saying it’s by God I’m still here.” WHO WAS THOMAS MATTHEW CROOKS? WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT TRUMP’S ATTEMPTED ASSASSIN Trump told the Post that had he not turned his head slightly to the right to read a chart on illegal immigration, the bullet that grazed him would have been fatal.  REPUBLICAN CONVENTION GETS UNDERWAY 2 DAYS AFTER TRUMP SURVIVED AN ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT He described the Secret Service agents who rushed at him as “linebackers,” mentioning another one eliminated the gunman with “one shot right between the eyes.”  “They did a fantastic job,” he told the Post. “It’s surreal for all of us.”

Trump announces Ohio Sen JD Vance as his 2024 running mate

MILWAUKEE – With an eye toward the future of a Republican Party dominated by former President Trump and his legions of MAGA supporters, Trump has named 39-year-old Sen. JD Vance of Ohio as his running mate on the GOP’S 2024 national ticket. The former president, who made his greatly anticipated and high-stakes announcement on Monday as the Republican National Convention kicked off in swing-state Wisconsin’s largest city, will now share the ticket with one of his top supporters in the Senate and a one-time Trump critic who has transformed into a leading America First disciple. “After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the Great State of Ohio,” Trump announced on his Truth Social platform. Trump emphasized that Vance, on the campaign trail “will be strongly focused on the people he fought so brilliantly for, the American Workers and Farmers in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Minnesota, and far beyond….” Vance, a former venture capitalist and the author of the bestselling memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy,” before running for elective office, was one of a handful of Republicans considered top running mate contenders. That group included North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum and Sens. Marco Rubio of Florida and Tim Scott of South Carolina.  FOX NEWS LEARNS BURGUM, RUBIO, INFORMED AHEAD OF VANCE ANNOUNCEMENT THEY WOULDN’T BE NAMED RUNNING MATE While Vance hails from Ohio, a one-time battleground state the former president comfortably carried in the 2016 and 2020 elections, the senator’s selection is expected to boost Trump among working-class Democrats, especially across the Rust Belt, who otherwise might have been supporters of President Biden, according to multiple experts who spoke with Fox News Digital as Trump was weighing his options. Vance grew up in a working-class family in a small city in southwestern Ohio. His parents divorced when he was young, and as his mother struggled for years with drug and alcohol abuse, Vance was raised in part by his maternal grandparents. CLICK HERE FOR THE LATEST FOX NEWS REPORTING FROM THE REPUBLICAN CONVENTION After high school graduation, Vance enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served in the Iraq War. He later graduated from Ohio State University and then earned a law degree at Yale University. Vance, who lives in Cincinnati, moved to San Francisco after law school and worked as a principal in a venture capital firm owned by billionaire venture capitalist Peter Thiel, who later became a major financial supporter of Vance’s successful 2020 campaign for the Senate. Before running for Senate, Vance grabbed national attention after “Hillbilly Elegy” – which tells his story of growing up in a struggling steel mill city and his roots in Appalachian Kentucky – became a New York Times bestseller and was made into a Netflix film. The story spotlighted the values of many working-class Americans who became supporters of Trump’s policies. Vance was a vocal critic of Trump when the former president first ran for the White House in the 2016 cycle.  However, Vance eventually supported Trump, praising the former president’s tenure in the White House, and in a Fox News interview in 2021, he apologized for his earlier criticism of Trump. FORMER TRUMP RIVAL NIKKI HALEY TO SPEAK AT GOP CONVENTION AS PARTY RALLIES AROUND TRUMP Trump’s endorsement of Vance days before the 2022 GOP Senate primary boosted him to victory in a crowded, competitive and combustible nomination race. “Look, I was wrong about Donald Trump. I didn’t think he was going to be a good president,” Vance told Fox News’ Bret Baier in an interview last month. “He was a great president, and it’s one of the reasons why I’m working so hard to make sure he gets a second term.” In the Senate, Vance has been one of the most vocal supporters of Trump’s America First agenda and has been a vocal opponent of U.S. aid to Ukraine. During the vetting process for the vice presidential nominee, Vance had a major ally in Donald Trump Jr. The former president’s eldest son and popular surrogate in the MAGA world is a close friend of Vance. CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP The elder Trump has also appeared to build a friendship with Vance. The former president likened Vance to “a young Abraham Lincoln” while speaking with Fox News’ Brian Kilmeade last week following a report that said he found facial hair like Vance’s to be distasteful. “No. I’ve never heard that one,” Trump said when asked about the report, which suggested Vance’s facial hair could potentially hinder his selection as his running mate. “He looks good… He looks like a young Abraham Lincoln.” Get the latest updates from the 2024 campaign trail, exclusive interviews and more at our Fox News Digital election hub.

Multiple sources told Fox News on Monday that Rubio – the three-term conservative senator who was considered to be among the names on a short list of contenders for running mate – was informed that he wouldn’t be named as the GOP’s 2024 vice presidential nominee. State Dept: World has ‘questions about our democracy’ after Trump shooting, US must ‘respond as a nation’

State Dept: World has ‘questions about our democracy’ after Trump shooting, US must ‘respond as a nation’

State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said Monday that people around the world have “questions about our democracy” following the attempted assassination of former President Trump over the weekend at a rally in Pennsylvania, and that it is now up to the U.S. to “respond as a nation.”  Miller, speaking to reporters at a briefing, began by saying that “what happens inside the United States is essential to the work that we do outside our borders,” and that “one of our responsibilities as America’s diplomats is to promote our core values around the world.” “We know today that people around the world, governments around the world, have questions about what happened on Saturday, just as Americans do. And our message to them is simple,” Miller said. “As President Biden has made clear, there is no place for violence in our democracy, period. We condemn this attack and all political violence strongly and unequivocally, just as we condemn political violence in any country.”  Miller continued by saying that Secretary of State Antony Blinken has spoken about the “effect of dehumanization and the cost to society when people lose sight of the core humanity they share with others, even those with whom they strongly disagree.” BIDEN SAYS POLITICS MUST NEVER BE A ‘LITERAL BATTLEFIELD’ OR ‘KILLING FIELD’ IN POST-TRUMP SHOOTING ADDRESS  He added: “So at this time, when people around the world have questions about our democracy, a big part of what we must do is show them how we respond as a nation.” TRUMP BREAKS SILENCE ON ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT: ‘I’M NOT SUPPOSED TO BE HERE’  Miller also revealed that Blinken this morning “convened the senior leadership team here at the department to remind them that one of America’s great strengths throughout our history has been our ability to reclaim our humanity, our fundamental decency after acts of tremendous violence and inhumanity.” “And he asked them to deliver that message around the world, to remind our allies and partners that America has faced trying times before, but that we have emerged from them stronger because of our core values that we share as a nation: a commitment to democracy, a respect for the rule of law and a common aspiration not to let the things that divide us overwhelm those that bind us together,” Miller concluded.

Classified docs case dismissal means ‘greatest’ legal ‘threat’ to Trump is ‘gone’: experts

Classified docs case dismissal means ‘greatest’ legal ‘threat’ to Trump is ‘gone’: experts

A Florida judge dismissed the case against former President Trump for the handling of classified documents, and some legal experts are calling it a “strongly reasoned” opinion that eliminates the “greatest legal threat” to the presumptive 2024 GOP just ahead of the Republican National Convention.  On Monday, Florida District Judge Aileen Cannon issued a 93-page opinion dismissing the case on the grounds that the appointment of special counsel Jack Smith to oversee the case was unconstitutional.  “Upon careful study of the foundational challenges raised in the motion, the Court is convinced that Special Counsel’s Smith’s prosecution of this action breaches two structural cornerstones of our constitutional scheme – the role of Congress in the appointment of constitutional officers, and the role of Congress in authorizing expenditures by law,” Cannon wrote.  Jonathan Turley, a defense attorney and law professor at George Washington University, told Fox News Monday that “of all of the cases that could be dismissed, this would be at the top of the list. This was the greatest threat. And for now, at least, it’s gone.” SPECIAL COUNSEL IN TRUMP CASE UNCONSTITUTIONAL, FORMER REAGAN AG SAYS Trump had faced charges stemming from Smith’s investigation into his possession of classified materials at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence. He pleaded not guilty to all 37 felony counts from Smith’s probe, including willful retention of national defense information, conspiracy to obstruct justice and false statements. John Malcolm, a former federal prosecutor and director of the Ed Meese Center for Legal and Judicial Studies, said that the case brought by Smith was the “most serious of the four criminal cases that were filed against him.”  A representative for Smith did not immediately return Fox News Digital’s request for comment and whether the Justice Department plans to appeal the decision.  JUDGE DISMISSES TRUMP’S FLORIDA CLASSIFIED DOCUMENTS CASE John Yoo, a constitutional attorney, told Fox News Digital that the question of the constitutionality of special counsel has been debated for over 20 years. “We’ve been thinking and talking about this, these people who specialize in the Appointments Clause. The courts have generally been deferential to the Justice Department and how they want to appoint different lawyers.”  “But I think because of how aggressive Jack Smith has been, he prompted close scrutiny from the courts,” said Yoo.  Yoo said Cannon’s decision is “a very thorough, strongly reasoned, persuasive opinion [that] goes through the history of special counsels and all the statutes that are involved.” “This decision is very well-reasoned and very well-written,” said John Shu, a constitutional attorney who served in both Bush administrations. “It’s not surprising because Congress intentionally allowed the independent counsel statute, which the Supreme Court found constitutional, to lapse, and they never replaced or amended it.” “And thus Congress, through its inaction, just allowed the regulatory agency, in this case the DOJ, to go ahead and promulgate its own regulations in place of an actual enabling statute,” he explained. LUNA’S BID TO FORCE GARLAND TO HAND OVER BIDEN-HUR TAPES FAILS IN HOUSE Monday’s decision is the latest in a string of legal victories for the former president. Earlier this month, the Supreme Court ruled that he and future presidents are granted limited immunity from prosecution for official acts in office. That decision directly impacted Smith’s separate case against Trump related to the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot.  “All of these cases seem to be collapsing of their own weight, and it’s because of lawfare,” said Jim Trusty, a former federal prosector and former lawyer for Trump.  “This is the price of lawfare when you create different crimes and different investigative approaches, and you do it all in the name of self-righteousness that Donald Trump needs to be stopped, which is really the philosophy behind all these prosecutions.”

‘Inclusive for all’: First-term Black Republican talks non-White voters ditching Dems for GOP

‘Inclusive for all’: First-term Black Republican talks non-White voters ditching Dems for GOP

First-term House Rep. Wesley Hunt, R-Texas, is part of a growing group of young, Black conservative lawmakers who are steadily changing the face of the Republican Party – and he believes that more non-White voters will follow. “This is what the party is today. This is the future of the party as well,” Hunt told Fox News Digital in an interview. Despite only being elected to Congress roughly a year and a half ago, Hunt – a retired Army captain who served in Iraq – is slated to speak at this week’s Republican National Convention (RNC), where former President Donald Trump will be formally declared the party’s White House nominee. He’s also been instrumental to Trump on the campaign trail, co-hosting various events with Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., in a bid to raise Trump’s support among Black voters. AMBER ROSE CONFIRMS PRO-TRUMP SPEECH AT RNC IN MILWAUKEE NEXT WEEK Hunt said it was important for more non-White Americans to join the GOP because it reflects the country’s own changing demographics. He pointed to his own home state of Texas, for instance, which is projected to be a majority-Hispanic state by the next census, Hunt said. “I don’t like playing identity politics, and I leave that to the left. But what I do want to be is inclusive for all Americans,” Hunt said. “We all want to do better. We all want a better middle class. We all want a safe southern border. We all want to feel safer in our communities. No one wants to see the turmoil we’re seeing all over the world.” “But I will tell you this, it’s important for Black people to see other Black Republicans, because traditionally, that hasn’t been the case.” Hunt conceded the that GOP was and is “overwhelmingly” White, but argued that the policies it stands for, and Democrats’ handling of the White House, are driving minority voters to their side. FORMER PRESIDENT TRUMP, MELANIA AT BARRON’S GRADUATION IN FLORIDA DURING BREAK IN NEW YORK CRIMINAL TRIAL “The biggest issues are safety, the southern border and, of course, the economy. People are struggling. People are having a hard time putting food on the table. They’re having a hard time putting gas in their cars. And those issues are issues that are very germane to the Black community,” Hunt said. “Traditionally, the Black community just voted as Democrats because their grandmother, their great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother and great-great-grandfather before them told them to do it. Well, now America has changed tremendously. It’s not like it was during Jim Crow, as we hear the Democrats talk about it all the time.” Hunt’s campaigning for Trump is part of Republicans’ overall effort this cycle to reach more non-White voters. Just last month, the Trump campaign opened an outreach office in a majority Hispanic part of Pennsylvania.  Trump has also made appearances in majority non-White parts of New York City while he was on trial in Manhattan.  TRUMP ADDRESSES CALLS FOR BIDEN TO DROP OUT OF 2024 PRESIDENTIAL RACE: HE ‘DOESN’T WANT TO QUIT’ It’s not clear yet how far that will take him, however. In 2020, Trump won roughly 8% of Black voters and 35% of Hispanic voters. But Hunt was hopeful that wider demographic representation could help Republicans boost their numbers. “I’m not running per se as a Black Republican. I’m running as a Republican that happens to be Black,” he said. “But I think having faces out there like mine, faces out there like [Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., and Rep. John James, R-Mich.], I think it’s very beneficial for the party, for people to see that, ‘You know what? It’s not just a party of all White people. Here are some young Black conservatives that are going to be leaders for the future, that are strong conservatives.’”
