Michigan becomes a top GOP Senate target as Mike Rogers ties with Dem opponent among older voters

The Senate race in Michigan has emerged as a much bigger Republican pickup opportunity than originally imagined as former Rep. Mike Rogers recently tied his Democrat opponent with a key group, according to a new poll. Michigan Republican strategist Jason Cabel Roe was not initially expecting the Republican traction that Rogers is now seeing in the state due to Michigan’s recent history of electing primarily Democrat senators. GOP operatives have agreed that the Michigan race’s status has come as a welcome surprise. “It seems like Michigan may be a little bit more competitive than Ohio,” a senior Republican strategist told Fox News Digital, remarking that races in West Virginia, Montana and Ohio have been traditionally understood as the best Republican opportunities this cycle. TRUMP’S FLORIDA ALLIES OPPOSE ABORTION AMENDMENT AS FORMER PRESIDENT DECIDES HOW TO VOTE “What I’ve seen shows that Michigan is extremely competitive,” he explained. The seat is currently occupied by outgoing Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich. In a new AARP-commissioned Michigan poll, Rogers is tied with Rep. Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich., among voters over 50 years old, 46%-46%. With all voters, the race remains tight, with Slotkin slightly ahead, 47% to 44%. Bob Ward, a partner with the bipartisan polling team Fabrizio Ward, said it is “definitely a battleground Senate race.” GOP SENATORS LOOK TO TIE CRACKDOWN ON NONCITIZEN VOTING TO MUST-PASS SPENDING BILL Slotkin led Rogers by just one point among registered voters, 42% to 41%, in a separate poll from the New York Times and Siena College in early August. Rogers has demonstrated his race as one of the closest this cycle so far and operatives have pointed to several reasons. HARRIS WAS ‘OPEN’ TO PACKING SUPREME COURT DURING 2019 PRESIDENTIAL BID Cabel Roe cited the Michigan race as evidence of the importance of candidate quality when it comes to winning elections. He said Rogers, a former congressman and chair of the House Intel committee, is a better prospect than some of the other Republicans running in tight Senate races across the country. Further, he noted the fact that Rogers isn’t taking on an incumbent like many of the other Republicans. Because of this, Slotkin faces many of the same challenges in her campaign for the Senate seat that Rogers does. One aspect that Cabel Roe said may have been overlooked in considering the competitiveness of Michigan is the relatively large Muslim constituency and their disapproval of the Biden-Harris administration’s actions in the war in Gaza between Israel and terrorist group Hamas. HARRIS CAMPAIGN MANAGER IGNORES PRESS CONFERENCE QUESTION AS VP HITS 33 DAYS WITHOUT ONE Cabel Roe doesn’t expect disaffected Muslim voters to turn to Republicans but said they could choose not to vote at all, hurting Democrats. Last month, nonpartisan political handicapper the Cook Political Report shifted the Michigan Senate race from “Lean Democratic” to “Toss Up,” reflecting the election’s competitive nature. Also in the category are Senate races in Montana and Ohio. Get the latest updates from the 2024 campaign trail, exclusive interviews and more at our Fox News Digital election hub.
Harris-led office, ATF stonewalling probe into ‘collusion’ with anti-gun group lawsuit: House Oversight chair

Vice President Kamala Harris is campaigning on what she characterizes as a record of a tough former prosecutor. But a White House office she has “overseen” may have focused less on gun crimes and more on targeting a legal gun manufacturer. The House Oversight and Accountability Committee says the Biden-Harris administration is stonewalling an investigation into potential “collusion” with a gun control group founded by billionaire former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg to boost Chicago’s lawsuit against Glock Inc. Since June, neither the White House nor the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, better known as the ATF, has responded to multiple inquiries from the committee. The ATF missed its most recent deadline to respond to the committee on Wednesday, Aug. 28. ATF WHISTLEBLOWERS SOUND ALARM ON BIDEN ADMIN PROPOSAL THAT EFFECTIVELY BANS PRIVATE GUN SALES: REPORT “The American people should be very concerned that, rather than prosecuting criminals, the Biden-Harris White House is colluding with anti-Second Amendment groups, and rather than responding to serious congressional requests with transparency, the White House is choosing to not comply with our request,” Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., told Fox News Digital. The committee has been investigating the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention’s communications with the Everytown for Gun Safety regarding a lawsuit by the city of Chicago against Glock, a firearms manufacturer. The controversy could also play into the presidential race. In September 2023, a White House press release announced, “The new Office of Gun Violence Prevention will be overseen by Vice President Harris, who has been a key leader in the Biden-Harris Administration’s effort to end our nation’s gun violence epidemic.” Biden named Stefanie Feldman director of the office. CHICAGO CRIME VICTIMS SEND MESSAGE TO DEMOCRATS: ‘DO SOMETHING FOR THE COMMUNITY’ “The White House’s Office of Gun Violence Prevention, overseen by Vice President Harris, is stonewalling the Oversight Committee’s investigation into potential collusion by White House officials with anti-Second Amendment groups despite our multiple requests,” Comer continued. Neither the White House nor the ATF responded to multiple inquiries from Fox News Digital for this story. In June, Comer wrote to Dettelbach and Feldman to inquire about a case in which the administration was communicating with the Bloomberg-founded Everytown for Gun Safety, which was providing legal assistance to the city of Chicago for its lawsuit against Glock, a firearms manufacturer. Then, in mid-August, Comer wrote to ATF Director Steven Dettelbach after the committee learned that the ATF had used encrypted apps and text messages to communicate with officials in the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention. “The committee has also failed to receive documents requested from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives related to its communication with the White House,” Comer said. “We are not going to allow the White House to get away with ignoring these requests and will continue to ensure accountability.” GASTON GLOCK, INVENTOR OF NAMESAKE GUN, DEAD AT 94 Chicago sued Glock in Cook County Circuit Court, attempting to restrict alterations that can happen with the guns after they are sold. The illegal alterations happened after the sale of the guns, but the plaintiff contends the company willfully sold pistols that can be converted into fully automatic weapons. Criminals use a piece called an auto sear to convert the weapon. The lawsuit asserts that Glock turned a blind eye to the alterations that criminals make. The White House met with representatives from Glock and requested the company change its pistol designs, the Oversight Committee found. Chicago filed the lawsuit in March. That same day, Everytown for Gun Safety President John Feinblatt posted on X: “Federal officials recently contacted Glock to discuss implementing new ways to modify Glock pistols to make it harder for Glock switches to be installed. Rather than help, Glock falsely insisted there is nothing they can do.” In a June 14 letter to Feldman, the director of the White House office on guns, Comer wrote, “Because this was a private meeting between Glock and the White House, Mr. Feinblatt seemed to have inside access to the White House meeting which raises questions about collusion with your Office.” BIDEN RIPPED FOR GUN CONTROL SPEECH HOURS AFTER HUNTER’S FIREARM CONVICTION: ‘WE LIVE IN CLOWN WORLD’ Comer asked for “communications between any individual at the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, Everytown for Gun Safety, and Everytown Law” related to Glock and Chicago. In a June letter to the ATF director, Comer noted that Glock firearms are popular among both ATF agents and the Chicago Police Department. “By this logic, the government could accuse nearly any manufacturer of liability for illegal alteration or misuse of their products,” Comer wrote. CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE FOX NEWS APP “The committee has learned that agents within your own agency, as well as the Chicago Police Department (and an estimated 65 percent of law enforcement agencies across the country), carry Glocks as their primary sidearm,” Comer’s letter to the ATF director continued. “One of the reasons Glocks are appealing to law enforcement is their design, which has garnered a reputation as one of the most reliable handguns available.” The city of Chicago, Everytown for Gun Safety and Glock Inc. did not respond to inquiries for this story. In July, Chicago and Everytown requested dismissal of the original complaint, then filed an expanded complaint that included Glock-related companies and two gun stores.
Minnesota Walz-appointed board requires teachers to ‘affirm’ their students’ gender identities

Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota has personally appointed members to the state’s teachers board, a body that will require educators to “affirm” their students’ gender identities, have “racial consciousness,” and learn to “disrupt oppressive systems,” public notices show. The Minnesota Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board (PELSB) updated its Standards of Effective Practice with new guidelines for aspiring state teachers that are set to take effect throughout the state in 2025. Walz, the Democratic vice presidential candidate, was behind the appointment of all 13 PELSB members during his tenure as governor. The new standards will require teachers in Minnesota to take controversial stances in their approach to teaching, such as “affirming” their student’s “gender,” “gender identity” and “sexual orientation.” In order to become a licensed educator, the new standards also require that a teacher “understands multiple theories of identity formation” and takes “culturally affirming, and proactive approaches to behavior.” KAMALA HARRIS AND TIM WALZ, ENDORSED BY TEACHERS UNIONS, RECEIVE FAILING GRADE FROM SCHOOL CHOICE GROUP The eighth section of the new standards, titled, “Racial Consciousness and Reflection,” requires that a teacher “understands how ethnocentrism, eurocentrism, deficit-based teaching, and white supremacy undermine pedagogical equity.” The practice also requires a teacher to assess “how their biases, perceptions and academic training may affect their teaching practice and perpetuate oppressive systems and utilizes tools to mitigate their own behavior to disrupt oppressive systems.” Catrin Wigfall, education policy fellow at the American Experiment, a North Dakota conservative think tank, says that “there is concern that these changes will exacerbate the teacher shortage, discouraging aspiring educators from entering the profession out of fear they will be forced to incorporate ideological perspectives just to be able to do the job they love.” ‘HE IGNORED US’: LOCAL MINNESOTA SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT SLAMS WALZ’S ‘NEGATIVE IMPACT’ ON K-12 EDUCATION “Gov. Tim Walz’s Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board (PELSB) plowed forward with making controversial changes to state teacher licensure requirements despite overwhelming pushback and criticism from the public. The changes will require aspiring educators to infuse ideologically-driven content into their licensure coursework (regardless of where they plan to teach), and the expectation is that this will then be implemented in their classrooms,” Wigfall told Fox News Digital. “The changes also make concerning and insulting generalizations about our teachers — that they are to consider themselves as biased with intersecting oppressive identities and that they need to be trained on how to treat others of different demographics with respect and dignity, celebrate student diversity, etc,” Wigfall, a former public school teacher, told Fox. Under the Walz-appointed board’s new rules, students will be taught about “power, privilege, intersectionality, and systemic oppression in the context of the various communities.” Those affected by the standards are “all teacher candidates completing an initial teacher licensure program in Minnesota and all teachers seeking an initial Tier 3 license via the licensure via portfolio process.” Schools across the state are preparing to adopt these policies as Walz runs on the Democratic presidential ticket with Vice President Kamala Harris.

Tim Walz condemns Hamas after being roasted for appearing to miss question about murdered hostages in Gaza

During a visit to the Minnesota State Fair on Sunday, Democrat vice presidential nominee Tim Walz appeared to miss a question about six hostages found dead in Gaza. The clip, making the rounds online, shows the Minnesota governor greeting supporters and answering a few questions. Someone off camera can be heard asking Walz, “What’s your reaction to the six hostages being found dead in Gaza?” Without answering, Walz tells the group of people, “All right, thanks everybody,” and walks away. DEM LAWMAKER CALLS OUT CNN FOR BOTCHING HEADLINE ON HAMAS KILLING HOSTAGES The angle made it seem like Walz was deliberately avoiding answering, but it’s not clear from the footage whether he had heard the question. The clip was still enough to set X users alight, with some accusing him of being a “coward” for failing to answer. Fox News Digital reached out to the Harris-Walz campaign to inquire whether the governor had heard the question and, if not, what his response would have been. Later Sunday, Walz issued a statement condemning Hamas as a “brutal terrorist organization.” “The anguish of losing a child is something no family should have to endure. Gwen and I send our deepest condolences to the Goldberg-Polin family, after Hamas’ murder of their son Hersh,” reads a post on Walz’s X account. “Hamas is a brutal terrorist organization – and we condemn their continued atrocities against both Americans and Israelis in the strongest possible terms.” Walz’s appearance at the Minnesota State Fair came after Israel Defense Forces found six Israeli hostages dead during a rescue operation in the tunnels below Gaza’s Rafah. Among the bodies recovered was Israeli-American Hersh Goldberg-Polin, who had been held by Hamas terrorists since Oct. 7, when war broke out between Israel and Hamas. Biden, Harris to meet with US hostage deal negotiating team as major protests erupt in Israel

President Biden and Vice President Harris plan to meet in the White House Situation Room on Monday, along with the U.S. hostage deal negotiating team after the murder of six hostages, including American citizen Hersh Goldberg-Polin, by Hamas on Saturday. The White House said the focus of the meeting is to discuss efforts to drive toward a deal that secures the release of the remaining hostages. The meeting is also closed to the press. Mobs of protesters took to the streets in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and other cities Sunday after the bodies of the hostages in Gaza were returned to Israel, fueling frustration and anger toward the country’s leadership for failing to achieve a ceasefire deal freeing the remaining hostages. Israeli media reported that the crowds of protesters were estimated to be up to 500,000 in major Israeli cities. Many of the protesters demanded Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu do more to bring home the remaining 101 hostages. ISRAEL’S LARGEST LABOR UNION PLANS MASSIVE STRIKE AFTER SIX HOSTAGES’ BODIES RECOVERED Reuters reported that Israel’s leadership estimates nearly a third of the remaining hostages are dead. While protests remained strong on Sunday, labor leaders called on workers to be part of a one-day strike Monday. “We are getting body bags instead of a deal,” Histadrut Labor Federation chief Arnon Bar-David said Sunday to reporters, according to Reuters. “We must reach a deal. A deal is more important than anything else.” AMERICAN HOSTAGE HERSH GOLDBERG-POLIN, 5 OTHERS ‘BRUTALLY MURDERED’ BY HAMAS RIGHT BEFORE RESCUE: IDF The Histadrut Labor Federation is Israel’s main labor union that represents hundreds of thousands of workers. Bar-David’s call for a one-day strike was supported by manufacturers and tech entrepreneurs in the country. Israel’s military announced the bodies of hostages 40-year-old Carmel Gat, 23-year-old Hersh Goldberg-Polin, 24-year-old Eden Yerushalmi, 32-year-old Alexander Lobanov, 27-year-old Almog Sarusi and 25-year-old Ori Danino were recovered from a tunnel in the southern Gaza city of Rafah. A polio vaccination campaign had begun in the war-torn Gaza strip, which sparked violence in the occupied West Bank. ISRAEL RECOVERS 6 DEAD HOSTAGES IN ‘COMPLEX RESCUE OPERATION,’ SAYS BODIES HELD UNDER HUMANITARIAN AREA The bodies of the six hostages have since been returned to Israel, according to military spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari. An Israeli health ministry spokesperson said a forensic analysis of the bodies determined the hostages were “murdered by Hamas terrorists in a number of shots at close range,” 48-72 hours prior. NETANYAHU MOURNS DEATHS OF SIX HOSTAGES RECOVERED IN GAZA, VOWS TO ‘SETTLE ACCOUNTS’ WITH HAMAS After learning of the news, protesters blocked streets in Jerusalem and held a demonstration outside Netanyahu’s residence. In Tel Aviv, protesters blocked the main highway while holding flags with images of the murdered hostages. During the protests, police reportedly arrested about two dozen Israelis nationwide, Reuters reported. DEFENSE MINISTER SAYS ISRAEL MUST ‘WIDEN THE GOALS’ OF WAR TO RETURN RESIDENTS TO THE NORTH After the hostages’ bodies were recovered, Netanyahu said in a statement that he was “shocked to the core” by the murders. “He who murders abductees does not want a deal. We are in a difficult day. The heart of the entire nation was torn,” Netanyahu said. “Along with all the citizens of Israel, I was shocked to the core by the terrible cold-blooded murder of six of our abductees.” War has been raging in the Middle East since Oct. 7, when Hamas launched a series of attacks on Israel, sparking Israel to declare war soon afterward. An estimated 257 Israeli hostages were trapped in Gaza when the war first began, and 101 hostages are still in Gaza. Of the 101 remaining hostages, 66 are believed to be alive, four of whom are American citizens. Fox News Digital’s Landon Mion, Emma Colton and Reuters contributed to this report.

Israelis protest, union calls strike after six more captives killed in Gaza

Thousands of Israelis have hit the streets demanding a ceasefire deal and Israel’s main labour union has called for a strike after six more captives were found dead in Gaza. Scuffles between the protesters and security forces were reported on Sunday night in one of the largest anti-government demonstrations in Israel since the Gaza war began nearly 11 months ago. The protesters chanted “Now! Now!” and demanded that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reach a ceasefire with Palestinian group Hamas to bring the remaining captives home. Many Israelis blocked roads in Tel Aviv and demonstrated outside Netanyahu’s office in West Jerusalem. Relatives and supporters of Israelis taken captive in Gaza protest outside PM Benjamin Netanyahu’s office in West Jerusalem [Ahmad Gharabli/AFP] In a statement, the Hostages and Missing Families Forum, which represents the families of captives held in Gaza, said the death of the six hostages was the direct result of Netanyahu’s failure to secure a deal to halt the fighting and bring their loved ones home. “They were all murdered in the last few days, after surviving almost 11 months of abuse, torture and starvation in Hamas captivity,” the forum said. Gil Dickmann, a cousin of Carmel Gat, whose body was among those returned, urged Israelis to put more pressure on their government. “Take to the streets and shut down the country until everyone returns. They can still be saved,” Dickmann posted on X. Israelis protest outside the prime minister’s office in West Jerusalem [Ahmad Gharabli/AFP] Gideon Levy, a columnist with Israel’s Haaretz newspaper, told Al Jazeera that Netanyahu has been defending the right-wing parties in his government that are against any concessions to Hamas. “They [the parties] could not care less about the hostages,” he said. Levy stressed that within Netanyahu’s Likud Party, the largest group in the government, Netanyahu wields a lot of power and the party supports him. “Therefore the challenges from within the government are very limited,” he said. “The real, only possible, challenge would be the streets, but … it is too early to judge.” Union calls for general strike Meanwhile, in a first since October 7, Israel’s largest trades union federation, the Histadrut, has called for a general strike to pressure the government into signing a ceasefire deal. The union said Ben Gurion Airport, Israel’s main air transport hub, would be closed from 8am (05:00 GMT) on Monday, as it aimed to shut down or disrupt major sectors of Israel’s economy, including banking and healthcare. “A deal is more important than anything else,” said Histadrut chief Arnon Bar-David. “We are getting body bags instead of a deal.” He said he was backed by Israel’s main manufacturers and entrepreneurs in the high-tech sector. The alliance of some of the most powerful voices in Israel’s economy reflected the scale of public anger over the deaths of the six captives. A woman shouts slogans as thousands of Israelis protest in West Jerusalem [Ahmad Gharabli/AFP] Municipal services in Israel’s economic hub Tel Aviv will also be shut for part of Monday. The Manufacturers Association of Israel said it backed the strike and accused the government of failing in its “moral duty” to bring the captives back alive. “Without the return of the hostages, we will not be able to end the war, we will not be able to rehabilitate ourselves as a society and we will not be able to begin to rehabilitate the Israeli economy,” said association head Ron Tomer. Israeli opposition leader and former Prime Minister Yair Lapid said he supported the strike. Truce negotiations between Israel and Hamas have dragged on for months, and many blame Netanyahu for failing to reach a deal. The Israeli military has killed at least 40,738 people and wounded 94,154 in its war on Gaza since October 7. An estimated 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, with some 250 people seized by the group. Israel’s army has acknowledged the difficulty of rescuing dozens of remaining captives and said only a deal can bring a large-scale return. Adblock test (Why?)
