Youngkin calls out Pentagon’s plan to gift China millions with rooftop solar panels

Exclusive: Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin penned a letter to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin to question the wisdom of the Pentagon’s plan to use $104 million in taxpayer funds to add solar panels to the rooftop of the Pentagon. The Virginia Republican told Austin that he has “serious concerns” about the plan to secure solar panels to the rooftop of the Pentagon and other military installations, most notably that there has been no “stated requirement that such panels be made in America using American technology.” “This decision has significant implications for U.S. national security and brings into question whether American taxpayer dollars will be used to purchase solar equipment from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), our greatest economic and geopolitical rival,” reads the letter, which was reviewed by Fox News Digital. PENTAGON TO INSTALL SOLAR PANELS ON ROOFTOP AS PART OF BIDEN CLEAN ENERGY PUSH The letter comes after a January Defense Department announcement about the plan, which it said was part of the Biden administration’s effort to promote clean energy and “reestablish the federal government as a sustainability leader.” The Pentagon is just one of 31 government sites that are slated to receive the $104 million in Energy Department grants, according a PBS report from January, with projects also taking place at the U.S. Army Garrison in Wiesbaden, Germany, and other locations. MAJOR WIND PROJECT WAS DEPENDENT ON BIDEN ADMIN WAIVING TAXPAYER SAFEGUARD: INTERNAL DOCS But Youngkin voiced multiple concerns about the plan, noting that “companies highly influenced or controlled by the CCP dominate the global solar supply chain,” making it vital that the Defense Department “require that military procurements for solar panels must come from verified domestic manufacturers with trusted supply chains.” The governor also highlighted other issues in addition to the national security implications, noting that Chinese solar panels have a higher carbon footprint than U.S. producers and often rely on forced labor to build them. “I seriously question the prioritization of this investment and the national security implications of this potential procurement,” Youngkin concluded. “If this proceeds, I strongly urge you to ensure any hardware installed on the roof of the Pentagon is manufactured in the United States and the component materials are domestically sourced.” The Pentagon did not immediately respond to a Fox News Digital request for comment.

Hurricane season bears down as bipartisan lawmakers push to detach FEMA from ‘partisan’ DHS

With parts of the U.S. hunkering down for an intense hurricane season, a bipartisan pair of lawmakers is pushing to unchain the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) from the layers of government bureaucracy they say have “bogged” the agency down. Reps. Jared Moskowitz, D-Fla., and Garret Graves, R-La., come from two states that have traditionally borne the brunt of the summer storm season. They want House leadership to take up their bill aimed at elevating FEMA to a Cabinet level position as soon as possible ahead of the rough weather period. “The predictions are not good,” Moskowitz said of the coming storm season. “But now is the time for people to prepare in the community. Now’s the time to take advantage.” FEMA sits under the jurisdiction of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), where it was relegated when the department was created after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. HOW STRONG CAN HURRICANES GET? HERE’S A BREAKDOWN OF CATEGORIES AND THE SAFFIR-SIMPSON WIND SCALE Moskowitz and Graves disagree over whether that was the right move – but both insisted it’s an untenable situation today. “Look, Homeland Security is becoming a little more partisan in the eyes of Congress…I’ve got to make sure that disaster management doesn’t become partisan. Disasters don’t strike Democrats or Republicans. It strikes everybody, it strikes Americans,” Moskowitz said. Graves told Fox News Digital of FEMA’s placement under DHS in a separate interview, “I understand the design and the intention, but it has not turned out as something that’s been beneficial.” “Let’s be honest, DHS can’t even handle the border. It completely failed at securing the southern border,” Graves said. “I don’t think we need that type of leadership involved in disaster preparation, disaster prevention, disaster response, and recovery.” “This is all about efficiency, it’s about being agile, being able to quickly pivot, move, and respond to some of these catastrophic disasters that we’ve seen in the United States over the past few decades.” STORM SURGE DURING HURRICANES: WHAT ARE THEY AND HOW CAN YOU PREPARE The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is predicting an 85% likelihood of an “above-normal” Atlantic hurricane season this year, according to a late May press release. It’s predicting eight to thirteen hurricanes in the period between June 1 and Nov. 30, including four to seven that are likely to be Category 3 or higher. NOAA is expecting 17 to 25 named storms in total. “We are seeing flooding in places we didn’t see before, right? We’re seeing saltwater intrusion. We’re seeing… more rain being dumped in places. We’re seeing more fires, and we’re seeing stronger hurricanes. All of this is related to climate change,” Moskowitz said. “FEMA is going to be busy, right? And they’re going to continue to get busier. And I just think in order for FEMA to get better…they can’t do that so long as they’re in Homeland Security.” Graves said there’s a backlog of hundreds of millions of dollars in disaster relief claims being tied down by the bureaucracy of being under DHS. HOW CHANGES IN WEATHER IMPACT CARS: THE CHALLENGES YOUR VEHICLE MAY FACE IN EXTREME HEAT VERSUS COLD “We have hundreds of millions – and probably billions of dollars – in outstanding claims with FEMA right now from a 2016 flood that happened in South Louisiana. Hurricane Ida, Hurricanes…Delta, Zeta, storms that happened earlier this decade – all of them have billions of dollars in outstanding claims,” Graves said. “This really is just an agency that has gotten bogged down in bureaucracy. And when you think about the needs of a community in the aftermath of a disaster, people have gone through these traumatic experiences. In some cases, they’ve lost everything. The last thing in the world we need is our own government re-victimizing them.” Fox News Digital reached out to DHS for comment.

Trump to participate in virtual pre-sentencing interview with probation officers

Former President Trump is set to take part in a virtual interview with New York probation officers Monday, before his sentencing hearing next month, the Trump campaign has confirmed. The former president and presumptive Republican presidential nominee was found guilty on all 34 counts of falsifying business records in the first degree last week. The six-week-long trial stemmed from charges brought by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. Trump is expected to be interviewed via video conference. A pre-sentencing probation interview is often conducted to prepare a report for the judge to learn more about the defendant, and possibly help to determine the proper punishment for the crime. TRUMP SAYS GUILTY VERDICT IS A ‘SCAR’ ON NEW YORK JUSTICE SYSTEM, VOWS TO ‘KEEP FIGHTING’ Trump’s sentencing date is set for July 11 — just four days before the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, where he is expected to be formally nominated as the 2024 Republican presidential nominee. “President Trump has established a commanding polling lead in the battleground and Crooked Joe Biden is on the ropes. His Democrat party allies know it, so they continue to ramp up their ongoing Witch-Hunts, further abusing and misusing the power of their offices to interfere in the presidential election,” Trump campaign communications director Steven Cheung told Fox News Digital. “President Trump and his legal team are already taking necessary steps to challenge and defeat the lawless Manhattan DA case. The American People will not fall for the Biden-directed Hoaxes and will hold Crooked Joe and his comrades to account this fall.” Trump is continuing to request Judge Juan Merchan terminate the gag order restricting him from speaking about witnesses and the case now that the trial has concluded, citing the 2024 election and the first debate against President Biden later this month, as well as his First Amendment rights and the rights of his supporters. TRUMP GUILTY ON ALL COUNTS IN NEW YORK CRIMINAL TRIAL Merchan imposed a gag order on Trump before the trial began, barring Trump from making or directing others to make public statements about witnesses with regard to their potential participation or about counsel in the case — other than Bragg — or about court staff, DA staff or family members of staff. Trump’s team repeatedly appealed the order and have been denied. Trump was fined $10,000 for violating the gag order during the trial. Merchan also threatened Trump with jail time for further alleged violations. “The last thing I want to consider is jail,” Merchan said. “You are [the] former president and possibly the next president.” “The magnitude of that decision is not lost on me,” Merchan said during the trial. “Your continued willful violation of the court’s order … constitutes a direct attack … and will not be allowed to continue.… It is not allowed to continue.” The Associated Press contributed to this report.
