House Republicans grill Columbia president over employment of prof who called Oct 7 Hamas attack ‘awesome’
House Republicans on Wednesday grilled Columbia University President Dr. Nemat “Minouche” Shafik regarding the employment of a professor who celebrated the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks as “awesome.” During the House Education and the Workforce’s hearing to discuss antisemitism on Columbia’s campus, Rep. Tim Walberg, R-Mich., condemned what he called the “perverse” statements by a tenured Columbia professor, Joseph Massad, who is listed as the chair of the School of Arts and Sciences Academic Review Committee. In the aftermath of Oct. 7, Massad penned an article praising “the innovative Palestinian Resistance” and Hamas militants for attacking Israel and glorifying Hamas’s slaughter of nearly 1200 Jews. He described the terror attack on southern Israel as “awesome,” “astonishing,” “astounding,” and “incredible.” “Professor Massad has also been known to have called Israelis, quote, ‘cruel and bloodthirsty colonizers,’ end quote. And who join them? Israeli military as, quote, ‘baby killing Zionists, Jewish volunteers for Israeli Jewish supremacy,’ end quote,” Walberg said. “In 2005, an investigation by Columbia corroborated allegations that Massad yelled at a Jewish student who questioned his views to, quote, ‘Get out of my classroom.’ Can you imagine free speech diversity on campus?” COLUMBIA STUDENTS OCCUPY CAMPUS AS UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT FACES GRILLING FROM CONGRESS Walberg blasted how, as chair of the School of Arts and Sciences Academic Review Committee, Massad oversees the periodic review of all departments, centers and institutes and in the school. The congressman asked Shafik if Massad had faced any consequences for his words. “He has been spoken to,” Shafik replied. When pressed about whether Massad had faced any further consequences, Shafik said he had been removed as chair of the committee. Later on, House Republican Conference Chair Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., stated that Massad was still listed as chair on the school’s website. Shafik said she would have to confirm whether he was still serving in that role. Stefanik pressed Shafik on whether she would remove him from that role if he was indeed still in that position, and she ultimately said, “Yes.” Walberg noted that Massad is a tenured professor, and asked Columbia Board of Trustees co-chairs Claire Shipman and David Greenwald if they would approve tenure for him if they could make that decision today. Both said they would not. COLUMBIA STUDENT SUSPENDED AFTER ALLEGED ‘FART SPRAY’ ATTACK DURING PRO-PALESTINIAN RALLY SUES SCHOOL Stefanik also pressed Shafik on another professor, Dr. Mohamed Abdou, a visiting professor in Modern Arab Studies. According to the congresswoman, Abdou was hired after the Oct. 7 terrorist attack in Israel, and on Oct. 11, posted “Yes, I’m with Hamas and Hezbollah and Islamic Jihad.” Stefanik said the professor also “decried false reports accusing Arabs and Muslims of decapitating the head, decapitating the heads of children and being rapists.” “We know that there were decapitations of babies, of innocent Israeli citizens, of seniors of women. There were rapes. And yet Columbia hired this individual as a professor. How did that hiring process work? Were you aware of those statements before the hiring?” Stefanik demanded to know. Under pressure, Shafik confirmed that Abdou will not be returning after this semester, and he “will never work at Columbia again.” The House GOP chair questioned the presidents of Harvard, UPenn and MIT in December on whether calls for the genocide of Jews violated rules against bullying and harassment of their schools’ codes of conduct. Unlike the presidents of those three universities, the Columbia president and board of trustee co-chairs all answered definitively “Yes” when asked the same question by Democratic Rep. Suzanne Bonanici, of Oregon.
Inside GOP plan to force as many votes on Mayorkas impeachment trial as possible
Senate Republicans are looking to hold as many votes as possible during the initial proceedings of the impeachment trial into Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas before Democrats in the chamber are expected to succeed in dismissing the trial. Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., explicitly stated his intent to seek a dismissal of the House-passed articles of impeachment during a speech on the Senate floor on Wednesday morning. While he had previously indicated that he wanted to quickly get past the proceedings, he had yet to confirm the Democratic plan to dismiss the trial. According to five Senate Republican sources familiar with the discussions, the structure of the proceedings is being negotiated with the Democrats. SENATORS TO BE SWORN IN FOR MAYORKAS IMPEACHMENT TRIAL AHEAD OF EXPECTED DISMISSAL The two parties are looking into a potential agreement for unanimous consent, in which Republicans are allowed to propose eight total points of order against the motions to dismiss. Each point of order, or fact that senators determine whether there is agreement on, will require its own vote. Lengthening the process and requiring Democrats to go on record on several components of the impeachment articles against Mayorkas. Schumer noted in his chamber floor speech on Wednesday that he would look to appease Republicans by allowing both points of order and debate time. “When we convene in trial today to accommodate the wishes of our Republican Senate colleagues, I will seek an agreement for a period of debate time that would allow Republicans to offer a vote on trial resolutions, allow for Republicans to offer points of order and then move to dismiss,” he said. HOUSE DELIVERS MAYORKAS IMPEACHMENT ARTICLES TO SCHUMER, SETTING UP TRIAL PROCEEDINGS This agreement will require that no senator objects, and Schumer urged them not to. The unanimous consent agreement which is being sought between the parties would allow 90 minutes of open debate after the senators are sworn in as jurors at 1:00 p.m. Then, two resolutions would receive votes, one from Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, calling for a full Senate trial, and another from Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, that would refer the matter to a Senate Impeachment Trial committee first. Representatives for Lee and Cruz did not confirm the unanimous consent agreement discussions before the time of publication. GOP SENATOR EYES LEGISLATION TO DEFUND ‘PROPAGANDIST’ NPR AFTER SUSPENSION OF WHISTLEBLOWER One source noted the GOP was making an effort to use every option possible to require more votes within the impeachment trial process, putting their Democratic colleagues on record as much as possible. Following the proposal of each point of order and prior to voting, the deal being discussed for unanimous consent would require four minutes of debate ahead of each vote. This time would be equally divided between the parties. One source explained that some Republican senators see this debate time as an opportunity to have the case for Mayorkas’s impeachment heard on the floor, even if it is not in the context of a full trial. SENATE DEMS REVEAL MASSIVE $79M AD SPEND TO PROTECT MAJORITY AHEAD OF KEY MATCHUPS Several Senate Republican sources also indicated that the dismissal route, which Schumer revealed he planned to take, was preferable to a motion to table. Tabling the trial has never happened with an impeachment, as GOP senators have noted, and it also does not provide the ability for any arguments from impeachment managers or defense counsel or debate between senators. If agreed to, the Mayorkas impeachment trial is likely to ultimately see dismissal, but Republicans will have several opportunities to put Democrats, particularly vulnerable ones who are up for re-election in pivotal states, on the record on multiple immigration and border related topics.
Illegal immigrant arrested in crash that killed Democratic senator’s adviser
An 18-year-old Honduran man who was arrested in connection to a two-vehicle crash that killed an adviser to Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, D-Nev., earlier this month was in the country illegally, having been detained at the border in 2021 and then let go, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) tells Fox News Digital. The illegal immigrant, Elmer Rueda-Linares, was involved in the deadly crash that took the life of father-of-one-Kurt Englehart in the early hours of April 6. The collision occurred on Kietzke and Peckham Lanes, about five miles south of Downtown Reno, Nevada. Rueda-Linares was initially charged with a felony hit-and-run, but that has been changed to failing to stop at the scene of an accident, the Reno Gazaette Joyrbal reported, citing the sheriff’s office. Border Patrol arrested him, and he was later released on his own recognizance on June 22, 2021. Fox News Digital contacted the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office for more details regarding the nature of the collision but did not receive a response. A Dearborn crowd was led in chants of “death to America” and “death to Israel” by Michigan-based activist Tarek Bazzi during the International Al-Quds Day rally earlier this month. Trump 2024 spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt called the chanters “radical extremists” when asked by Fox News Digital whether the former president would be open to receiving support from those who engaged in the chants. “Crooked Joe Biden’s weakness and his appeasement policies have strengthened our enemies abroad and emboldened radical extremists here at home. When President Trump is back in the White House, he will bring peace and unity through strength and make America Great Again,” Leavitt said. When asked if the president would court those agitators, Biden campaign spokesperson Charles Lutvak replied, “No.” Bazzi’s remarks were also denounced by the White House. SWING STATE’S DEM GOVERNOR CONDEMNS ‘DEATH TO AMERICA’ CHANTS IN HER STATE MORE THAN A WEEK AFTER PROTEST “The White House condemns these abhorrent and antisemitic remarks in the strongest terms,” deputy press secretary Andrew Bates told Fox News Digital. “As President Biden has said, America is the greatest nation on Earth and a beacon to the world.” The campaign initially limited its comments to the chants themselves, largely reciting the White House statement. Biden’s campaign spokesperson Lauren Hitt told Fox News Digital that the chants had been “condemned” by the campaign. Ohio AG shuts down Democrat proposal that would skirt election deadline to get Biden on ballots
Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost’s office rejected an effort by state Democrats to circumvent a key election deadline to allow President Biden on state ballots this week, according to documents obtained by Fox News Digital. The documents show correspondence from Yost’s office and Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose, as well as attorney Donald McTigue, who is representing Democrats on the matter. LaRose, a Republican, had notified state Democrats earlier this month that the Democratic National Convention would not occur until more than a week after Ohio’s Aug. 7 deadline for certifying presidential candidates. LaRose warned that either the Ohio assembly would have to vote to change the law, or Democrats would have to move up their plans for certifying Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. McTigue responded in an April 9 letter, arguing the Secretary of State had the authority to accept a provisional certification of Biden and Harris’ nominations prior to the official certification at the party’s convention. DEMS BLASTED OVER LEAKED MEMO THAT SAYS ‘QUIET PART OUT LOUD’ ABOUT VOTER REGISTRATION EFFORTS He claimed Ohio law allows for a provisional move because Biden and Harris “have secured the pledged delegates necessary to become the party’s nominees.” DEMOCRATIC STRATEGIST BOASTS PARTY FOUGHT TO UNDERMINE ‘DANGEROUS’ THIRD-PARTY THREAT TO BIDEN LaRose then consulted with Yost’s office about the proposed solution, but the attorney general shot down the plan in a statement on Monday. “The Democratic Party’s notion of providing a ‘provisional certification’ by the statutory deadline simply is not provided for by law,” Yost’s office said. “Instead, the law mandates the Democratic Party to actually certify its president and vice-president candidates on or before August 7, 2024. No alternative process is permitted.” “Thus, the Secretary of State lacks authority to accept ‘provisional certifications’ from the Democratic Party pursuant to [the law]. The Democratic Party must actually certify its presidential candidates on or before August 7, 2024 to be placed on the 2024 General Election ballot,” the statement continued. McTigue has yet to offer a response to the attorney general’s office, and he did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital. Seven jurors have been selected and sworn in so far to serve on the jury for former President Trump’s historic and unprecedented first criminal trial. Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, has been charged by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg with 34 counts of falsifying business records in the first degree. The charges are related to alleged hush money payments made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 presidential election. TRUMP SAYS CRIMINAL TRIAL IS HAVING A ‘REVERSE EFFECT,’ AS HE CAMPAIGNS AT NEW YORK BODEGA, VOWS TO SAVE CITY Trump has pleaded not guilty to all counts. He has blasted the trial as pure politics, a “political persecution” and maintains his innocence. The former president is expected to testify during his trial. “I tell the truth,” Trump said last week, when asked about his possible testimony. Trump is the first president in United States history to stand criminal trial. By the end of jury selection on Tuesday, seven jurors had been selected and sworn in. Jury selection is set to resume Thursday at 9:30 a.m. Here is a look at each of the seven jurors so far. Juror #1 is a man who lives in West Harlem. He is originally from Ireland. He has no children and enjoys doing anything outdoorsy. He gets his news from the New York Times, Daily Mail, Fox News and MSNBC. When asked by Trump defense attorney Todd Blanche if he was aware Trump is charged in other cases and jurisdictions, and how that affects him, the man said, “I don’t have an opinion.” Juror #2 is a woman who lives on the Upper East Side with her fiancé. She does not have children. She is a native New Yorker and works as an oncology nurse at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. The woman has a masters’ degree in nursing. Her fiancé works in finance in New York City. The woman said she enjoys spending time with her family and friends and taking her dog to the park. When asked, she said she gets her news from The New York Times, Google and Facebook. When asked by Trump’s attorney what her opinion of Trump is, the woman said, “I don’t really have one, especially in a courtroom. He can be treated as anyone else.” “No one is above the law,” she said. When pressed again on what opinion she walked into the courtroom with, the woman replied, “I didn’t even know I was walking into this… I am here for my civic duty.” Juror #3 is a young to middle-aged Asian man who lives in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan. The man said he grew up in Oregon and has been an attorney for five years practicing corporate law. The man said he enjoys hiking and running, and reads his news from The New York Times and Google. Juror #4 is an older, middle-aged man who lives on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. The man was born in Puerto Rico, is self-employed and has worked as an IT consultant for approximately 10 years. The man said he has been married for “a long time,” and has one child and two grandchildren. He said his wife is a writer, and his child works in sales and research. “I have no spare time,” he said, when asked about his hobbies. “I guess my hobby is my family.” The man said he works with community non-profits and said he has previously served on a jury in a civil case, but he did not remember the verdict. He said he gets his news from the New York Daily News, the New York Times and Google. He said he also listens to podcasts. As for Trump, the juror said he finds him to be “fascinating and mysterious.” “He walks into a room, and he sets people off one way or another,” the juror said. “I find that really interesting. Really, this guy can do all of this — wow. That’s what I think.” Juror #5 is a young Black woman. She said she is a Harlem native and has been a teacher of English Language Arts for eight years. The woman was previously a caseworker at a juvenile detention center and now works at Kip New York City Charter Schools. She said she has a masters’ degree in education. “I’m creative at heart,” she said, adding that she enjoys photography. The woman said that she is not married and does not have children. Her mother was an administrative aide in the New York Police Department, and her godfather was an NYPD homicide detective. The woman said she gets her news from Google and TikTok. She was asked if Trump chose not to testify, whether she would hold that against him. “I won’t hold that against him,” she said. She explained that she has friends who have strong opinions on the former president but said she is not a political person and tries to avoid political conversations. She did say, however, that she appreciates Trump’s candor. “President Trump speaks his mind, and I’d rather that than someone who’s in office who you don’t know what they’re thinking,” she said. When jurors were asked if they were aware Trump was charged in other cases than Bragg’s, most jurors were. However, juror #5 raised her hand to indicate that she was learning of additional charges for the first time. Juror #6 is a young woman who lives in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan. She described herself as a New Yorker. The woman is a software engineer for the Walt Disney Company. She said she likes to dance.
Johnson says House will consider border bill alongside foreign aid after GOP rebellion threats
Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., is having the House vote on a border security bill alongside his proposal for foreign aid after its lack of measures to deal with the U.S. migrant crisis spurred threats of rebellion from his fellow Republicans. “After significant Member feedback and discussion, the House Rules Committee will be posting soon today the text of three bills that will fund America’s national security interests and allies in Israel, the Indo-Pacific, and Ukraine, including a loan structure for aid, and enhanced strategy and accountability,” Johnson told GOP lawmakers. A fourth bill would combine miscellaneous national security priorities, including the House’s recently passed bill that could pave the way to a TikTok ban and the REPO Act, a bipartisan measure to liquefy seized Russian assets and send that money to Ukraine, as well as “sanctions and other measures to confront Russia, China, and Iran,” according to Johnson. MASSIE THREATENS TO OUST SPEAKER JOHNSON IF HE DOESN’T STEP DOWN OVER FOREIGN AID PLAN “The Rules Committee will also be posting text on a border security bill that includes the core components of H.R.2,” Johnson said. H.R.2 is a comprehensive border security bill passed by House Republicans last year, which includes measures like the Trump administration-era “Remain In Mexico” policy and would expand expulsion authorities for law enforcement at the U.S.-Mexico border. Democrats have panned H.R.2 as a nonstarter. The border security bill would move through the House Rules Committee separately from his four foreign aid bills, but each is being teed up for a Saturday evening vote. JOHNSON LIKELY FORCED TO GET DEM HELP ON FOREIGN AID PLAN AS REPUBLICANS DECRY LACK OF BORDER MEASURES Johnson said lawmakers would be able to submit amendments for all five pieces of legislation as well. Meanwhile, he’s also dealing with threats led by Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., and Thomas Massie, R-Ky., to oust him from power over the foreign funding. But Congress has been under mounting pressure to find a way forward in aiding Israel and Ukraine as conflicts in both regions escalate at an alarming rate. That proposal, unveiled Monday, almost immediately got pushback from House Republicans who demanded that he leverage their razor-thin majority to include U.S. border policy provisions alongside any foreign aid. But the rebellious flank of his conference is already signaling that his new plan may not be enough – and that Johnson will need to seek help from Democrats to advance his foreign aid plans. HOUSE REPUBLICANS BLAST ‘CRY WOLF’ CONSERVATIVES WHO TANKED FISA RENEWAL BILL “Anything less than tying Ukraine aid to real border security fails to live up to [Johnson’s] own words just several weeks ago. Our constituents demand – and deserve – more from us,” Rep. Scott Perry, R-Pa., wrote on X. Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, similarly said, “The Republican Speaker of the House is seeking a rule to pass almost $100 billion in foreign aid – while unquestionably, dangerous criminals, terrorists, & fentanyl pour across our border. The border ‘vote’ in this package is a watered-down dangerous cover vote. I will oppose.” And Heritage Action, a key conservative group, is warning that it’s against Johnson’s idea to combine the four foreign aid bills before sending them to the Senate. “While each bill may receive individual votes, any effort to combine the measures before sending them to the Senate undermines the intent to consider the bills on their own merits. Attempting to circumvent accountability for a vote on any of the individual bills with the understanding that they will be combined on the back end is disingenuous for members who claim to oppose the Senate-passed foreign aid supplemental,” the group said,

As regional tensions run high, Iran has paraded drones, missiles and soldiers to show it is ready for a response from Israel after launching an unprecedented attack on its archenemy. Iran carried out its first-ever direct attack on Israel at the weekend in response to an April 1 air strike on the consular building of Iran’s embassy in Syria. Iran’s attack “brought down the glory of the Zionist regime [Israel]”, President Ebrahim Raisi said at a military base on the outskirts of Tehran on Wednesday. “This operation showed that our armed forces are ready,” he said in a speech to the regular army and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps for Army Day, a national holiday. Wednesday’s parade saw the Iranian armed forces showcase a range of military equipment, including drones and long-range ballistic missiles. Among them were multiple versions of the Ababil, Arash and Mohajer drones as well as the Dezful medium-range ballistic missile and S-300 air defence missile system. Raisi reiterated warnings against “the slightest act of aggression” by Israel, saying it would lead to “a fierce and severe response”. Israel has said it will respond to the weekend attack with military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari saying Iran will not get off “scot-free”. The Israeli army said most of the projectiles fired by Iran were shot down with the help of the United States and other allies and the attack caused only minimal damage. Iran hailed the attack as “successful” and said it “achieved all its objectives”, including inflicting damage to an airbase and intelligence centre that it said was used by Israel to carry out the strike in Damascus. On Wednesday, Iran’s air force commander, Hamid Vahedi, warned Iran’s enemies against making a “strategic error”. “We are 100 percent ready on all aerial fronts,” he was quoted as saying by the ISNA news agency.
