Spaced out: Sheila Jackson Lee tells Texas students ‘planet’ moon is ‘made up of mostly of gases’
Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, misinformed a group of high school students in Houston that the moon is a “planet” that is “made up mostly of gases.” Jackson Lee, who once led the House Science Committee’s space subcommittee, made several false statements that stunned a crowd of teenagers at Booker T. Washington High School in Houston during Monday’s solar eclipse. “You’ve heard the word ‘full moon,’” Jackson Lee told the students who were with her on a sports field before the eclipse. “Sometimes, you need to take the opportunity just to come out and see a full moon is that complete-rounded circle, which is made up mostly of gases. And that’s why the question is why or how could we as humans live on the moon? Are the gases such that we could do that?” The congressional representative continued, saying, “The sun is a mighty powerful heat, but it’s almost impossible to go near the sun. In one statement, she told students the moon not only reflects the sun’s light but also emits “unique light and energy.” “You have the energy of the moon at night,” Jackson Lee said. TEXAS COUPLE SAYS ‘I DO’ IN 100% TOTALITY DURING SOLAR ECLIPSE: ‘JUST MAGICAL’ “What you will see today, will be the closest distance that the moon has ever been in the last 20 years, which means that’s why they will shut the light down, because they will be close to the earth, which is an amazing experience,” Jackson Lee said in a live video clip posted to her X account. “You will be able to tell because there will be complete darkness.” In the video, Jackson Lee tells students not to look at the sun directly, warning them that the eclipse was a serious matter and looking into the sun directly could mean students not being able to leave on their own, but instead, will be walked out while holding their arm. In the clip, Jackson Lee is seen struggling to put the eclipse glasses on her face as students moved toward the sports field to watch the celestial event. A LOOK BACK AT ‘QUEEN’ SHEILA JACKSON LEE’S WILDEST MOMENTS FROM YEARS IN CONGRESS: ‘MEAN’ BOSS, VERBAL ABUSE This is not the first time Jackson Lee has made questionable statements regarding science, let alone turned the misstep into a political issue. In 1997, Jackson Lee visited NASA and demanded to see the flag that astronauts planted on Mars. She was gently advised that no human being had ever been to Mars because it was so far away. She then went into a rage and accused the space agency of racism before pointing out her membership on the House science committee. Jackson Lee also claimed during a floor speech in March 2014 that the U.S. Constitution was 400 years old. While speaking in opposition to a Republican-backed proposal, she gave a brief history lesson. During the lesson, she thanked the GOP for “giving us an opportunity to have a deliberative constitutional discussion that reinforces the sanctity of this nation and how well it is that we have lasted some 400 years operating under a Constitution that clearly defines what is constitutional and what is not.” Jackson Lee was off by nearly 200 years old, as the Constitution was adopted in 1787. Jackson Lee also has a history of being criticized as one of the “meanest” members of Congress to work for. In a 2011 Daily Caller report, several former staff members accused Jackson Lee of using demeaning language and name-calling when addressing them. “You stupid motherf—-r,” one former employee said Jackson Lee “constantly” called him, while another described an occasion her parents were visiting from out of town and overheard Jackson Lee call her a “stupid idiot” because of a scheduling change. “Don’t be a moron, you foolish girl,” the former aide alleged Jackson Lee told her. Others said she often forced them to work long hours, even into the early hours of the morning, and that she demanded to be driven by staff everywhere she went, regardless of how short the distance. Republicans debate ahead of runoff for Alabama congressional seat
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — The two Republicans running for Alabama’s redrawn 2nd Congressional District clashed in a debate that aired Monday ahead of next week’s runoff. Dick Brewbaker, a businessman and former state senator, and Caroleene Dobson, an attorney and political newcomer, are vying for the GOP nomination in the April 16 runoff. The winner will face the Democratic nominee in the closely watched November election. BIDEN COULD BE LEFT OFF ALABAMA’S GENERAL ELECTION BALLOT IF KEY DEADLINE IS MISSED, ELECTION OFFICIAL WARNS Dobson and Brewbaker traded verbal jabs in the debate as Dobson criticized legislative votes that Brewbaker had taken on taxes and business regulation. Brewbaker fired back that Dobson was repeatedly lying about his record. “We don’t need to send a retired career politician,” Dobson said in her opening statement. “If you send me, I’ll stand tall with President Trump against the left.” Brewmaker said, “everything she has ever said about my record” has been a distortion. “As a car dealer, believe me, I know a lot more about the effect of regulation on small business than a lawyer from Texas.” Dobson, who was raised in Monroe County, lived and practiced law in Texas before joining the Maynard Nexsen law firm in 2019. The Democratic nominee will be decided in an April 16 runoff between Shomari Figures and state Rep. Anthony Daniels. Democrats aim to flip the once reliably GOP congressional seat in the Deep South. Republicans are seeking to hold the seat with control of the U.S. House of Representatives at stake. The 2nd District was redrawn last fall by a federal court to boost the percentage of Black voters after judges ruled the state’s previous map likely violated the Voting Rights Act. Dobson and Brewbaker expressed similar views on supporting tax cuts, opposing gun control measures, border security, reducing government spending and increasing U.S. energy production. They also touted a number of hot-button GOP issues such as restrictions for transgender athletes. Dobson attacked Brewbaker on some of his legislative votes, and Brewbaker fired back that she was misrepresenting his record. “My opponent voted for the largest tax increase in Alabama history. I have shown that I will fight taxes tooth and nail,” Dobson said. Brewbaker said that was “another lie from my opponent.” “All of the votes that she calls me raising taxes, was me putting local initiatives on the ballot so Alabamians could vote on it, which is the way democracy is supposed to work,” Brewbaker said. Brewbaker said he had a proven record in Montgomery that included allowing charter schools and other school choice options and getting legislation approved that required insurance companies to cover autism therapy. “We need someone who understands how the system works and has proven he can stop legislation that makes government bigger while at the same time making a smaller government more responsive to the needs of its citizens,” Brewbaker said. Brewbaker led in the March primary, capturing 37% of the vote to Dobson’s 24.76%. A primary runoff is required when no candidate captures more than 50% of the primary vote. The congressional debate was sponsored by WSFA and WALA. The two stations are also airing a debate Tuesday night between Figures and Daniels.
California struggling to gauge efficacy of homeless crisis spending
California spent $24 billion to tackle homelessness over the past five years but didn’t consistently track whether the huge outlay of public money actually improved the situation, according to state audit released Tuesday. With makeshift tents lining the streets and disrupting businesses in cities and towns throughout California, homelessness has become one of the most frustrating and seemingly intractable issues in the country’s most populous state. An estimated 171,000 people are homeless in California, which amounts to roughly 30% of all of the homeless people in the U.S. DESANTIS RIPS CALIFORNIA, NEW YORK POLICIES ALLEGEDLY FUELING RETAIL THEFT IN ANNOUNCING NEW FLORIDA CRACKDOWN Despite the roughly $24 billion spent on homeless and housing programs during the 2018-2023 fiscal years, the problem didn’t improve in many cities, according to state auditor’s report. Among other things, the report found that the California Interagency Council on Homelessness, which is responsible for coordinating agencies and allocating resources for homelessness programs, stopped tracking spending on programs and whether programs were working in 2021. It also failed to collect and evaluate outcome data for these programs due to the lack of a consistent method, the audit found. Some data regarding the number of program participants and bed inventory in the state system might not be accurate or reliable, the audit found. The council, which lawmakers created in 2017 to help deal with the state’s homelessness problem, has only reported on homelessness spending once, according to the audit. Without reliable and recent data on its spending, “the state will continue to lack complete and timely information about the ongoing costs and associated outcomes of its homelessness programs,” the report says. Democratic state Sen. Dave Cortese, who requested the audit last year after touring a large homeless encampment in San Jose, said the audit depicts “a data desert” when it comes to homelessness. The biggest issue is the lack of transparency at every level, he said. “Despite (the auditor office’s) professionalism and best efforts, they are at this time unable to … draw conclusions about things like whether or not overhead is appropriate or too high,” Cortese said, though he stopped short of calling for a halt to future spending on the homelessness issue. Republican state Sen. Roger Niello said the lack of accountability is troubling. “California is facing a concerning paradox: despite an exorbitant amount of dollars spent, the state’s homeless population is not slowing down,” Niello said in a statement. “These audit results are a wake-up call for a shift toward solutions that prioritize self-sufficiency and cost effectiveness.” California funds more than 30 programs to tackle homelessness. The audit assessed five initiatives and found that only two of them — one that converts hotel and motel rooms into housing and one that provides housing-related support — are “likely cost-effective.” The state auditor also reviewed homelessness spending in two major cities, San Jose and San Diego, and found that both failed to effectively track revenue and spending due to a lack of spending plans.

Committee discourages impeachment of Vermont sheriff accused of kicking suspect
A special legislative committee recommended against impeachment Tuesday of a Vermont sheriff charged with assault for kicking a shackled prisoner but said the sheriff is doing a disservice by remaining in office. A resolution to be introduced in the House by committee members on Wednesday urges Franklin County Sheriff John Grismore to resign “for the good of the people of Franklin County.” “While the Committee is not recommending articles of impeachment for Sheriff Grismore, they made it clear that Mr. Grismore remaining in office is a detriment to the citizens of Franklin County,” House Speaker Jill Krowinski said in a statement. “The Committee heard from many individuals, and while the report lays out a list of concerning actions that are completely unacceptable of an elected official, it does not meet the high bar for impeachment.” VERMONT SHERIFF ACCUSED OF KICKING SHACKLED PRISONER PRESSURED TO RESIGN Grismore did not immediately return an email seeking comment. He told WCAX-TV that the recommendation not to pursue articles of impeachment is a vindication of what he knew all along. Grismore was elected sheriff in November 2022, a few months after he was fired from his position as a captain in the sheriff’s department for kicking a shackled prisoner. He pleaded not guilty to a simple assault charge. Grismore was the only candidate on the ballot after winning both the Republican and Democratic nominations in the Aug. 9, 2022, primary. Just before he took office in February 2023, state police said they were investigating the finances of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department and Grismore. In December, the Vermont Criminal Justice Council found that he violated the state’s use of force policy and voted 15-1 that he permanently lose his law enforcement certification, which means he is unable to enforce the law in Vermont. A special legislative committee was formed last May to investigate possible impeachment. The committee said in the report released Tuesday that it believes it’s important for a sheriff to be able to fulfill law enforcement duties and should get ongoing law enforcement training, which is not available to a decertified officer. It also said it believes that a sheriff should show and uphold “the highest standards of honesty, integrity, conduct, and service.” “Through his conduct prior to taking office and his continued insistence that his use of force was appropriate, Mr. Grismore demonstrates none of these,” the committee said.
GOP Senate hopeful looks to distance himself from link to Texas green energy firm
Republican Utah Senate candidate Trent Staggs has taken a hard stance against progressive ideas when it comes to environmental, social and governance issues — (otherwise known as ESG) — while he’s been on the campaign trail. But some would argue his past may betray him, since he previously served on the board of an ESG-focused company that sought to stop climate change. Staggs — the current mayor of Riverton, Utah, is locked in a tight GOP primary. He has repeatedly taken aim at renewable-energy-related policies since entering the race. The ESG movement broadly calls for investments to be pulled from traditional energy industries and diverted to green energy industries in the fight against global warming. According to his campaign website, Staggs stated that he has “battled ESG on the homefront” and “pushed back on damaging ‘woke’ policies like ESG.” “Mayor Staggs recognized early on the insidiousness of ESG and authored a resolution that prevents Riverton City from working with organizations that espouse it,” the website adds. TEXAS EFFORT TO PUNISH BLACKROCK OVER GREEN-ENERGY POLICIES RECEIVES WIDESPREAD GOP SUPPORT Securities and Exchange Commission filings reviewed by Fox News Digital show Staggs served on the board of directors of Dallas-based oil remediation services firm Vivakor between September 2020 and January 2023, leaving the position shortly before announcing his Senate campaign. Vivakor describes itself as a “clean energy technology, ESG company focused in the area of oil remediation and natural resources.” During Staggs’ tenure, Vivakor further stated that it “intends to continue its ESG focus while seeking opportunities to diversify its products.” WEST VIRGINIA CRACKS DOWN ON MAJOR BANKS OVER ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVISM The Dallas firm separately characterizes itself as a “socially responsible operator, acquirer and developer of clean energy technologies and environmental solutions.” In a statement to Fox News Digital, Staggs said that merely noting his past work with Vivakor “does not tell the full truth.” “My two-year stint with Vivakor was one of several companies and consulting assignments where I fought ESG policies in the corporate boardroom,” Staggs said. “At Vivakor, I successfully advocated for the acquisition of traditional oil and gas assets in direct repudiation of ESG.” “I was one of the few voices on the board fighting vehemently against ESG,” he continued. “I have seen first hand the detrimental effects of financial markets forcing ESG on public companies, and this is why I’ve been a champion of fighting this insidious practice both in the corporate world and also within my powers as an elected official.” Vivakor didn’t respond to a request for comment when reached by Fox News Digital. The Utah primary elections, meanwhile, are slated for late June. Staggs trails U.S. Rep. John Curtis, conservative lawyer Brent Hatch and former Utah state Rep. Brad Wilson, according to the latest poll conducted in January by Deseret News and the University of Utah Hinckley Institute of Politics.
Florida woman who stole, sold Biden’s daughter’s diary sentenced to one month in prison
A Florida woman who stole the diary of President Biden‘s daughter and then sold it to a conservative group was sentenced Tuesday to one month in prison. Aimee Harris appeared in a Manhattan federal courtroom where she was also ordered to three months of home confinement. “I do not believe I am above the law,” Harris told a judge after a prosecutor requested a prison sentence following her failure to appear at numerous sentencing dates on the grounds that she was consumed with caring for her two children, ages 8 and 6. “I’m a survivor of long term domestic abuse and sexual trauma.” Harris pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge in August 2022, admitting that she received $20,000 of the $40,000 that was paid by Project Veritas for personal items belonging to the president’s daughter, Ashley Biden. SEAN HANNITY: DEMOCRATS ARE HAVING TROUBLE STOMACHING BIDEN Project Veritas is known for conducting hidden camera stings that have embarrassed news outlets, labor organizations and Democratic politicians. In court, a tearful Harris apologized for enabling Ashley Biden’s personal writings to be made public. Harris took the journal from a Delray Beach, Florida, home where Biden believed her items were being stored after she briefly lived there in 2020. Along with the diary, Harris stole a digital storage card, books, clothing, luggage and “everything she could get her hands on” in the hopes she “could make as much money as she could,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Sobelman said. “She wanted to damage Ms. Biden’s father,” he said. Judge Laura Taylor Swain called Harris’ actions “despicable and serious,” saying she exploited the president’s daughter for profit and to impact the presidential election. HUR TESTIFIES BIDEN ‘WILLFULLY RETAINED CLASSIFIED MATERIALS,’ BUT PROSECUTORS ‘HAD TO CONSIDER’ MENTAL STATE She further said Harris has abused and strained the court system, and “made promises to the court with no intention of keeping them.” The judge noted that Harris and a co-defendant, Robert Kurlander, had tried unsuccessfully to sell Ashley Biden’s belongings to then-President Donald Trump‘s 2020 presidential campaign. Defense attorney Anthony Cecutti requested that Harris not receive prison time. He cited her traumatic life and her efforts to care for her children while recovering from abuse and violence. He said the trial had been punishment enough for Harris and that she hasn’t been able to secure full-time employment. “She carries the shame and stigma of her actions,” he said. Activist who spurred ‘death to America’ chants called for Israel’s ‘absolute annihilation’ in unearthed video
An anti-Israel activist who went viral over the weekend in Michigan for spurring “Death to America” and “Death to Israel” chants has a history of espousing violent rhetoric. Tarek Bazzi, a Michigan-based activist associated with the Hadi Institute, ignited the chants this past Friday during a speech at an International Al-Quds Day rally in Dearborn, which subsequently drew widespread attention and criticism on social media. “Imam Khomeini, who declared the International Al-Quds Day, this is why he would say to pour all of your chants and all of your shouts upon the head of America,” Bazzi said in the video shared by the Middle East Media Research Institute. After Bazzi made his comments, the crowd began chanting, “Death to America!” Bazzi later shifted his attention to Israel, telling the audience that when “fools” ask them “if Israel has the right to exist,” the chant “Death to Israel” is “the most logical chant shouted across the world today.” ‘DEATH TO AMERICA,’ ‘DEATH TO ISRAEL’ CHANTS POUR OUT OF MUSLIM PROTESTERS IN MICHIGAN ON LAST DAY OF RAMADAN Bazzi’s recent anti-Israel rhetoric and inflammatory comments appear to be commonplace for the activist in public settings while riling up crowds. According to a separate video posted to Facebook in May 2021 by the Al-Quds Committee, which calls itself an “effort to peacefully raise the voice against Zionist atrocities and propaganda,” Bazzi can be heard using violent rhetoric towards Israel and Jewish people while speaking to a group of protesters. “Understand what these slogans mean. ‘From the river to the sea’ means the absolute annihilation of the Zionist regime,” Bazzi says in the video reviewed by Fox News Digital. “It is absolute evil. It is a cancer in the Middle East and in the world. There is no way to deal peacefully with such an entity,” Bazzi said. “There can be no two-state solution when you have a Zionist aggressor that knows no limits. A Zionist aggressor that will steal land and slaughter children and that will take pride in doing such deeds.” “So yes, this is a class struggle in part. This is a national struggle in part,” Bazzi continued. “But I tell you, this is something deeper than all of that. This is a divine struggle. International Al-Quds Day, an annual pro-Palestinian event held on the last Friday of Ramadan where Bazzi ignited the “Death to America!” chants, enjoys significant support in Dearborn, which has the country’s highest proportion of Muslim residents. Celebrations of the day have been controversial worldwide, even drawing a ban by German authorities in Berlin on multiple occasions. Rallies to mark the day have been taking place in Dearborn for at least 20 years, according to Steven Stalinsky, the executive director of the Middle East Media Research Institute, who previously told Fox News Digital that the town has become a “hotbed of hate for many years.” “You can see rallies and sermons in support for Hamas, Hezbollah, Iran,” Stalinsky said, noting that the threats emanating from the city have become even more pronounced since the October Hamas terrorist attack on Israel. The Hadi Institute did not respond to a Fox News Digital request for comment by the time of publication.
Republican senator slams ‘unserious’ efforts by Congress to hold Biden, COVID authorities accountable
Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wisc., lambasted Congress on Tuesday for “out of control” federal spending and “unserious” efforts to hold the government accountable. Johnson, the ranking member on the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, spoke at the Heritage Foundation’s “Weaponization of U.S. Government Symposium” in the morning, where he discussed his investigations into the COVID-19 pandemic response and great difficulty conducting oversight of the Biden administration. The problem with Congress, Johnson argued, is that members have voted to grow the government without conducting proper oversight of waste, fraud and abuse. He observed that federal spending is on track to be $6.9 trillion this year while the budget for his investigative committee was cut. GOP SENATORS DEMAND DOJ, FBI PROMISE NOT TO RETALIATE AGAINST BIDEN WHISTLEBLOWERS “I got my funding cut when I became ranking member, okay. Do you know how many staff members we have to do oversight over millions of government employees? We’ve got five. That’s how unserious Congress is about oversight,” Johnson complained. The Wisconsin Republican has led the charge in the Senate to investigate the origins of COVID. He has also accused the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of coordinating with social media companies to censor COVID vaccine skeptics — although critics have accused Johnson of peddling anti-vaccine misinformation. Yeah, so they are completely unaccountable to the American public through your elected representatives. And that’s been going on for decades. Johnson said that his colleagues are “not really contemplating all this government they’re voting for, all this spending.” “Again, to me, the problem is a massive federal government that has gone so far outside the constraints of the Constitution. Last month, the Biden-Harris campaign accused former President Trump of threatening “political violence” after Trump, while speaking about the auto industry at a rally in Ohio, suggested there will be a “bloodbath” if he doesn’t win in the upcoming election in November. Trump had been talking about China and how “they think that they are going to sell” cars manufactured in Mexico to the U.S. “with no tax at the border.” After getting flak for the comment, Trump doubled down, using the word “bloodbath” again several weeks later at a campaign event to criticize Biden’s border policies.
