Connecticut becomes one of last states to allow in-person early voting
Connecticut has become one of the last holdout states to allow early in-person voting ahead of the state’s presidential primary on Tuesday. Saturday was the last day for early voting before Tuesday, which was marked by low turnout. Only 13,476 voters out of both Democrats and Republicans in the state came out to cast an early ballot. There are around 1.2 million voters registered for both parties in the state. WITH EYE TOWARD 2024 ELECTION, REPUBLICANS MAKE BIG PUSH FOR EARLY VOTING IN 2023 Voters passed a constitutional amendment in 2022 by 60% for the initiative, and the Senate last year approved a bill to allow 14 days of early voting for the general election. “This is a historic moment for Connecticut,” Stephanie Thomas, Secretary of the State, said in a statement after early voting began last Tuesday. “We now have so many more opportunities for people to go out and vote.” She added, “We asked voters to help us test the system and make their voices heard, and voters of Connecticut answered the call.” The state has strict requirements to be eligible to vote by absentee ballot. Some Republicans had been concerned about voter security connected to early voting. It’s very organized and secure.” When a voter casts an early ballot in the state, they’re immediately marked as having voted in the Centralized Voter Registration System to prevent cheating. Roberts added that looking up voters in the computer database has been time-consuming and may need to be streamlined before the general election. Republican voter JoLynn Brochu, who voted early, worried there’s “Too much opportunity for cheating,” with the new system, but chose to do it anyway because, “I know Democrats take that opportunity at a much higher rate than Republicans do. A handful of liberal churches, religious groups and LGBTQ+ organizations are celebrating the fact that Transgender Day of Visibility, recognized each year on March 31, falls on Easter Sunday in 2024. Easter Sunday, which is not a fixed date, also falls on March 31, marking one of the most important liturgical celebrations as millions of Christians commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Though Transgender Day of Visibility has been celebrated since 2009 on March 31, several liberal religious and non-religious organizations have rejoiced that Easter will fall on the same day. Some churches are superimposing transgender themes on Easter celebrations. In commentary shared by Rachael Ward, the United Church of Christ’s minister for Gender and Sexuality Justice Ministries, the author declared that “LGBTQ+ people need a resurrection moment where death does not have the word and love transcends hate.” BIDEN SLAMMED ON SOCIAL MEDIA AFTER ANNOUNCING TRANSGENDER DAY OF VISIBILITY ON EASTER SUNDAY “The resurrection story holds for LGBTQ+ people of faith the ultimate promise and truth: God is constantly coming out for your love and your personhood. And God knows intimately the ways it aches when those around us deny us of our rights to be human and in relationship to each other,” Ward wrote in an article published on the Ohio-based, socially liberal protestant church’s website. “Resurrection this Easter Sunday can look like uplifting not just the disparities trans and non-binary siblings are facing, but offering space for their gifts from God to be celebrated.,” Ward added. To celebrate Easter in Canada, the Calgary Unitarians, a liberal religious organization, is incorporating a drag show as part of its Sunday service that will show “support [for] our Trans Siblings” and serve as a “sacred act of protest.” “This will be a thought-provoking service and sacred act of protest as we support our Trans Siblings during this current political climate. We’ll exploring the concept of TRANSformation in today’s society with DRAG Queen performances and story time, singing, dancing, and thought provoking speakers,” the group wrote on Facebook earlier this month.” An advertisement for the Easter Sunday celebration dubbed the event “DRAG ME TO CHURCH” and included images of four drag queens. A California church is also planning to interweave its celebration of Easter with this year’s Transgender Day of Visibility by recognizing “trans and nonbinary people” in a new photo-text exhibit that will be available for viewing for three Sundays beginning on March 31. Dubbed the “New life, fuller life, authentic life,” the Easter Sunday service at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Palo Alto will be held on March 31 and will be led by church Revs. Amy Zucker Morgenstern and Catherine Boyle. “How appropriate that Easter and the Transgender Day of Visibility coincide this year! The trans and nonbinary people shown with their families in the photo-text exhibit that opens today at UUCPA exemplify the joyful rebirth one can experience by being authentically oneself with others,” the pair of church leaders shared in a post to the church’s website. Last week, Pride Source, a Michigan-based publication, also urged its readers to go “to church (or temple), observe trans day of visibility, catch a queer film, [and/or] see an aerial drag performance” to celebrate the Transgender Day of Visibility. In a list of suggestions, the publication urged its readers to take part in “a religious Easter service on March 31 at a local queer-affirming church.” “Places like the First Congregational Church of Ann Arbor (fccannarbor.org), where out lesbian head minister Rev. Dr. Darcy Crain leads congregants in joyful, fully inclusive services each week and a sign along State Street reads, ‘God’s doors are open to all,’ welcome local LGBTQ+ community members to join them on Easter Sunday,” the publication noted. The celebrations come amid President Biden’s issuing of an official proclamation on Friday declaring March 31 as the Transgender Day of Visibility. “On Transgender Day of Visibility, we honor the extraordinary courage and contributions of transgender Americans and reaffirm our Nation’s commitment to forming a more perfect Union — where all people are created equal and treated equally throughout their lives,” a statement released by the White House read. “Today, we send a message to all transgender Americans: You are loved. You are heard. You are understood. You belong. You are America, and my entire Administration and I have your back,” it continued. Several social media users, including former GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy and other Republican lawmakers, called Biden out on X for the declaration. Traditional Christians regard transgender ideology as contrary to the Gospel. Pope Francis has repeatedly warned of the “dangers” of gender ideology. “Why is it dangerous? Chinese illegal immigrant arrested after driving onto military base in California
A Chinese illegal immigrant was arrested in California on Wednesday after entering a Marine Corps base without authorization and ignoring orders to leave, officials say. Border Patrol’s El Centro Sector Chief Patrol Agent Gregory Bovino said that agents responded to a call from the base about a Chinese national “who entered the base w/o authorization, ignoring orders to leave.” A spokesperson for the U.S. Marine Corps’ Training and Education Command told Fox News Digital that the individual had attempted to access the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, California, without valid ID. CHINESE MIGRANTS MAKE MULTI-COUNTRY TREK TO US SOUTHERN BORDER: ‘I JUST WANT TO MAKE MONEY’ “Despite being prompted to exit at the Condor gate by installation security, the individual proceeded onto the installation without authorization. Military law enforcement were immediately notified and detained the individual,” the spokesperson said. The base then contacted Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and he was then taken into custody. CBP said that Border Patrol agents had responded to a report of a suspected Chinese national who had driven onto the base without authorization. The agents arrived and determined that the man was a Chinese national who was illegally present in the U.S. “Subject was confirmed to be in the country illegally,” Bovino said on X, formerly known as Twitter. “His purpose & intent behind his actions are still being investigated.” There have been more than 22,000 encounters of Chinese nationals at the southern border since October 1, a massive increase from the 2,176 encountered in federal fiscal year 2022 and the 450 encountered in fiscal year 2021. China is one of more than 150 countries represented among migrants arriving at the southern border. Some officials and Republican lawmakers have raised concerns that single adults entering from the geopolitical foe could pose a national security threat. But I want to live a good life in the future, and I want my children to be educated well. I strive to take root in the United States as soon as possible.” CBP said on Friday that it does not comment on sensitive law enforcement matters, but works closely with law enforcement, intelligence and federal partners to identify those who may pose a threat to national security or public safety. The agency stressed to Fox News Digital that it is enforcing consequences for those who enter the U.S. illegally. “DHS continues to enforce United States immigration laws, expanding lawful pathways while strengthening enforcement consequences for those who cross our border unlawfully. Individuals and families without a legal basis to remain in the U.S. are subject to removal pursuant to Title 8 authorities and are subject to a minimum five-year bar on reapplying for admission and potential criminal prosecution if they subsequently re-enter without authorization,” the agency said in a statement. “CBP is leveraging all available resources and partnerships to efficiently vet and process migrants consistent with law.”
Baltimore bridge collapse: Maryland governor says conditions are currently ‘unsafe’ for rescue divers
Maryland Governor Wes Moore stated Saturday that conditions remain “unsafe” for rescue divers due to weather and debris following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. “Conditions in the water make it unsafe for rescue divers. And we’re not just talking about weather and wind,” Moore said during a press conference, appearing alongside Baltimore City Mayor Brandon Scott and first responders. “We’re talking about debris, we’re talking about wreckage. We’re talking about pieces of the Key Bridge that are in the water.” “We are going to ensure the safety of our first responders and we are not going to compromise one for the other,” Moore continued. “We are going to do both at the same time.” FUNDING BILL TO REPLACE BALTIMORE KEY BRIDGE COULD TAKE SHAPE IN ‘MATTER OF WEEKS’: TOP HOUSE REPUBLICAN “Right now, the conditions make it unsafe for rescue divers, but as soon as those conditions change, Colonel Butler has assured me that those rescue divers will be going right back in the water,” Moore said. Moore also said the Army Corps and their partners would move forward with crane operations Saturday and north sections of the bridge would be cut up and removed, calling it “a remarkably complicated process.” BALTIMORE BRIDGE COLLAPSE: MARYLAND GOV. WES MOORE SAYS ‘THERE IS NOTHING WE WILL NOT DO’ ON RECOVERY EFFORTS “This will eventually allow us to open up a temporary restricted channel that will help us to get more vessels in the water around the site of the collapse,” Moore said. Moore also thanked responding agencies as well as the Biden-Harris Administration following the collapse. Eight construction workers, all of whom were from Central America, plummeted into the water after the Dali, a Singaporean-flagged container ship, slammed into the bridge, causing it to collapse. Two were rescued after the collapse. Divers have recovered the bodies of two others, and the other four are presumed dead. GOP SENATE CANDIDATE PUSHES REPUBLICANS TO REBUILD BALTIMORE BRIDGE The Dali was en route to Sri Lanka from Baltimore. It is owned by Grace Ocean Private Ltd., and Danish shipping giant Maersk said it had chartered it. The vessel was carrying more than 4,000 metal shipping containers, 56 of them with hazardous materials inside. Thirteen of those were destroyed, officials said. Booms were placed to control the spread of any oil that seeped into the water, and state environmental officials were also sampling the water Thursday. Aid ships with nearly 400 tonnes of food depart Cyprus for Gaza
Saturday’s shipment marks the second delivery by sea as Gaza faces imminent famine while Israel continues to block aid. A three-ship convoy has left Cyprus’s Larnaca Port headed for the Gaza Strip with nearly 400 tonnes of food and other supplies as people continue to die from hunger in the enclave amid Israel’s ongoing war. The aid that departed on Saturday will be taken to Gaza by a cargo ship and a platform towed by a salvage vessel. The shipment comes as several NGOs and rights organisations accuse Israel of deliberately blocking aid to Gaza, amid warnings of imminent famine in the besieged strip. Charity, World Central Kitchen (WCK) said the vessels were carrying ready-to-eat items like rice, pasta, flour, legumes, canned vegetables, and proteins, enough to prepare more than one million meals. Dates, which are traditionally eaten to break the daily fast during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, were also on board. An aid ship operated by the Spanish NGO Open Arms delivered 200 tonnes of food aid on March 16, which WCK distributed. During that mission, a makeshift jetty was constructed from rubble to enable offloading in the enclave, which does not have any port facilities. The mission was financed mainly by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and received the support of the Cypriot authorities. Saturday’s dispatch includes two forklifts and a crane to assist with future marine deliveries. Separately, the United States plans to construct a floating pier off Gaza to receive aid. Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides said late on Friday that the target completion date is May 1, but it could be ready by around April 15. Israel’s war on Gaza has displaced more than 80 percent of Gaza’s population and pushed hundreds of thousands to the brink of famine, the United Nations and international aid agencies have said. Israel’s military said it continued to attack dozens of targets in Gaza, days after the UN Security Council issued its first demand for a ceasefire. Airdrops The US military said during an airdrop on Friday that it had released more than 100,000 pounds (45,000kg) of aid that day and almost a million pounds (453,000kg) overall, part of a multicountry effort. But the aid is not sufficient, and aid groups have criticised the drops as “symbolic” as Israel continues its war on Gaza. In some cases, the drops have proven lethal, with one killing five people in an incident when a parachute failed to open, and 12 people drowned as they attempted to get aid dropped in the sea. Humanitarian officials say deliveries by sea and air are not enough and that Israel must allow far more aid by road. Speaking to reporters in Egypt on Saturday, Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said that the state of near-famine in Gaza can be dealt with in a short time if Israel opened the land crossings for aid to enter. Impending famine The UN-backed global authority on food security warned earlier this month that famine was likely to occur by May in northern Gaza and could spread across the enclave of 2.3 million people by July. On Friday, a senior US Department of State official told the Reuters news agency that famine is “quite possibly” present in parts of the north, adding that an obstacle to getting more aid to Palestinians was a scarcity of trucks in the enclave under Israeli siege. “While we can say with confidence that famine is a significant risk in the south and centre but not present, in the north it is both a risk and quite possibly is present in at least some areas,” the official said on condition of anonymity. Drones, and missiles fired across Ukraine Ukraine’s air force said on Saturday that Russia launched 12 Shahed drones overnight, nine of which were shot down, and fired four missiles into eastern Ukraine. It’s China poisoning our children, and it’s got real life consequences for families, not just in our district, but across the nation,” he said. Carrier detailed his son’s struggles with addiction, telling Fox that he and his family decided years ago they weren’t going to try and hide it from the outside world, because other families were dealing with the same thing, and sweeping it under the rug wasn’t the way to find a solution. He said his son wasn’t “a partier,” but instead used drugs as a way to “cope with life.” “While you or I might grab a bag of chips because we’ve had a bad day, he went to the far extreme,” Carrier said. “Joey didn’t use every day. . . . And so, with knowing that, we want to talk about it, we want to help others, and we don’t want him forgotten,” he added. Carrier’s candidacy has already attracted attention from national figures, including former Republican presidential candidate and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, who endorsed him to succeed Pence earlier this week. When asked about the endorsement, Carrier said he was “grateful,” and that the platform Ramaswamy ran on as a presidential candidate resonated with people across the district. He also touted his endorsements from local business leaders and law enforcement officials, citing them as evidence of his campaign’s momentum. Carrier is currently joined in the Republican primary race by six other candidates. The winner will likely become the district’s next representative, considering that election analysts rate the race as either “solid” or “safe” Republican.
