Trump, Haley turn up the volume on each other as GOP presidential primary slugfest moves to New Hampshire
Former President Donald Trump and Republican presidential nomination rival Nikki Haley – and their allies – traded plenty of fire in the closing days leading up to Iowa’s caucuses. But the verbal crossfire is just an appetizer of things to come as the two candidates resume their battle in New Hampshire ahead of next week’s primary. Trump, celebrating his landslide victory in Iowa, where he shattered the previous winning margin in a GOP caucus and topped 50% of the vote, complimented Haley and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in his victory speech. “I think they both actually did very well,” Trump said Monday night in Des Moines. “They are very smart people, very capable people.” IOWA’S OVER – NOW THE GOP PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY FIGHT TURNS TO NEW HAMPSHIRE But behind the scenes, multiple sources in the former president’s political orbit confirmed to Fox News that Team Trump is preparing to launch broadsides against Haley, the former two-term South Carolina governor who served as U.N. ambassador during the Trump administration. HEAD HERE TO SEE HOW MUCH TRUMP WON BY IN IOWA’S REPUBLICAN CAUCUSES New ads on social media are expected, as first reported by NBC News. Also in the works – direct verbal attacks from the former president, who on Monday charged Haley was “a Globalist RINO” who “can never win in the General Election because she doesn’t have MAGA, and never will!” Trump, who is the commanding frontrunner for the GOP nomination as he makes his third straight White House run, and his allies for months took aim at DeSantis, who was the clear alternative to the former president for much of last year. But as Haley gained momentum and caught up with DeSantis in polls for a distant second behind the former president, Trump world started turning its attention to her. The campaign launched TV ads last month putting Haley in its sights. Also joining in was MAGA Inc., the Trump-aligned super PAC that has been targeting Haley in recent weeks with TV ads, including one that’s running on New Hampshire airwaves this week that blasts her over the combustible issue of immigration and border security. On Tuesday, Trump campaign senior adviser Jason Miller charged in a statement that “Nikki Haley is a fictional character who isn’t ready for the bright lights or the big stage. As folks learn of Haley’s Romneyesque, open border and tax-raising globalist RINO ways, the less likely they are to be supportive.” And Karoline Leavitt, a Trump White House veteran and former congressional candidate who came onboard the 2024 campaign this week as a national spokeswoman, argued that Haley “is a tax-raising, open borders globalist who would put China first and America last.” Haley came in third in Iowa, slightly behind DeSantis. But she’s leagues ahead of DeSantis and narrowing the polling gap with Trump in New Hampshire, a purple state where independent voters play a crucial role in the state’s storied presidential primary. Haley and her campaign are framing the contest in New Hampshire as a two-candidate race between her and Trump. “Nikki Haley and Donald Trump are in a dead heat in New Hampshire,” Haley campaign spokesperson Olivia Perez-Cubas emphasized in a statement to Fox News. She noted that Trump is “going to attack her with everything he’s got, and we’re ready for it.” Those comments are seen as a sign that Haley world is ready to return fire with a counteroffensive against Trump. Haley herself is turning up the volume, comparing Trump to President Biden in her Iowa caucus night speech on Monday. “Trump and Biden both lack a vision for our country’s future, because both are consumed by the past, by investigations, by vendetta, by grievances,” she claimed. And Haley is also getting on-air support from the aligned Stand for America PAC, which is targeting Trump with TV ads in New Hampshire, including one spot that charges the former president’s entire 2024 campaign is “based on revenge.” Haley spent much of her time in Iowa taking aim at DeSantis, as they battled for second place. But with the Florida governor in the single digits in New Hampshire, she’s increasingly turning her attention to Trump. And time is at a premium. If Trump convincingly wins next week’s primary in New Hampshire, many pundits argue it would be game over for Haley and DeSantis. Veteran Iowa-based Republican strategist Jimmy Centers noted that Trump’s landslide victory in Iowa “speaks to his grip on the party.” And he emphasized that “if any other candidate wants a shot at slowing him down in this race for the nomination, they need very quick field consolidation. New York court dismisses Trump appeal to lift gag order in NYAG case
The New York Court of Appeals dismissed former President Trump’s challenge of the gag order imposed on him in the non-jury civil trial stemming from New York Attorney General Letitia James’ lawsuit against him and his businesses. The court said Trump’s move to appeal the order had no “substantial constitutional question,” despite Trump attorneys arguing that his First Amendment rights were restricted. TRUMP SAYS LEGAL WOES ARE A BIDEN, DEMOCRATIC PARTY SETUP: ‘NEW FORM OF CHEATING’ The ruling comes after the court issued a stay on the gag order, imposed by New York Judge Arthur Engoron on the second day of the trial, back in October, blocking all parties from making derogatory statements about his court staff. The order was later reinstated. Engoron said his order came after a defendant “posted to a social media account a disparaging, untrue and personally identifying post about a member of my staff.” Engoron added that “personal attacks on members of my court staff are unacceptable, not appropriate” and warned they would not be tolerated. Without naming the former president, Engoron was a[pparently referring to a now-deleted Trump post on his Truth Social account about Engoron’s law clerk, Allison Greenfield. Trump alleged in a Truth Social post that Greenfield had a relationship with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. The post also contained a photo. JUDGE IMPOSES PARTIAL GAG ORDER IN TRUMP ORG. TRIAL BLOCKING PARTIES FROM VERBAL ATTACKS AGAINST COURT STAFF “Schumer’s girlfriend, Alison (sic) R. Greenfield, is running this case against me. How disgraceful!” Trump posted. “This case should be dismissed immediately!!” Trump deleted the post shortly after posting. Engoron fined Trump $5,000 in October for violating the order on social media, and threatened imprisonment if further violations occurred. Days later, Engoron fined Trump another $10,000, claiming the former president was making negative comments about his clerk. The ruling Tuesday comes days after closing arguments in the months-long non-jury civil trial wrapped. Last week, Trump defied another Engoron order, and delivered his own closing argument in court. Trump said his financial statements were “perfect,” and stressed that the bank loans were repaid and are “as happy as can be.” Trump acknowledged that there was an “error” made regarding one “triplex,” but said that mistake was “immediately corrected” and was an “honest mistake.” NEW YORK JUDGE FINES TRUMP $5K FOR VIOLATING PARTIAL GAG ORDER IN CIVIL FRAUD TRIAL “When you say don’t go outside of these things, I’m an innocent man, persecuted,” Trump said to Engoron while blasting the case as “election interference” and saying if he is “not allowed to talk about it, it’s a disservice.” Engoron told Trump to wrap up his remarks within one minute, but Trump fired back, saying, “You can’t listen for more than one minute?” “Mr. Kise, please control your client,” Engoron said to Trump’s attorney. However, the former president went on to say, “I did nothing wrong, they should pay me for what I’ve been put through.” Trump defended his business empire and said he was sued to get publicity. Trump left court shortly after he spoke, and hosted a press conference at his 40 Wall St. property in Manhattan. “She’s a political hack. The attorney general, the judge is obviously extremely friendly with the group,” Trump said. “And we’ll see what happens.” Trump said there is a chance “they surprise people on a positive side, we’ll have to see what happens exactly.” “But we’ve proven this case so conclusively and we’ve asked for directed verdict many times,” Trump said. “They don’t have any facts. They don’t have any evidence against us.” New York Attorney General Letitia James sued Trump, his family and his business empire, claiming he inflated his financial statements and deceived banks. Trump has denied any wrongdoing. The former president has repeatedly said his assets were actually undervalued. Capitol Police begin arresting Gaza ‘cease-fire’ protesters holding sit-in at Cannon Rotunda
Capitol Police have started arresting pro-Palestinian protesters who participated in a sit-in demonstration in the Cannon Rotunda calling for a cease-fire in Gaza on Tuesday. “A group of people legally entered the Cannon House Office Building after they went through screening. Demonstrations are not allowed inside Congressional Buildings, so when they started to protest and refused to stop, we began arresting them. Arrests are ongoing,” a U.S. Capitol Police spokesperson said in a statement provided to Fox News Digital. Video showed the group of approximately 150-200 Mennonites sitting on the ground and singing hymns, with some holding placards reading, “Let Gaza Live,” and, “Free All Hostages.” They also chanted, “Cease-fire now,” before officers approached and selected individuals to take into custody. WHITE HOUSE STAFF ‘RELOCATED’ AFTER PRO-PALESTINIAN RIOTERS DAMAGE ANTI-SCALE FENCING, HURL OBJECTS AT COPS Protesters seemed to comply by standing and letting officers place zip-ties on their wrists before being escorted out of the building. The protest was intended as an act of civil disobedience, FOX 5 DC reported. Police did not immediately disclose the number of arrests, but the group Mennonite Action said 150 were arrested. “A group of about 150 Mennonites were arrested today in the Cannon building in an act of peaceful civil disobedience, singing hymns and calling for a ceasefire in Gaza,” Mennonite Action wrote on X, sharing more footage of the demonstration. “As the Capitol Police made arrests, we never stopped singing. #Mennonites4Ceasefire.” BIDEN INTERRUPTED BY ‘CEASE-FIRE NOW CHANTS,’ VOWS HE’S WORKING TO GET ISRAEL ‘OUT OF GAZA’ The group added in another X post, “Permanent ceasefire now. Release all hostages. End the occupation of Palestine. Hundreds of Mennonites are taking peaceful action in DC today to lift our voices for these demands.” “As a group of about 150 Mennonites are getting arrested in an act of peaceful civil disobedience in the Cannon building, a larger group of 200 Mennonites are holding a hymn sing and worship service outside to call for a permanent ceasefire,” Mennonite Action wrote. This comes as the left-wing, anti-war nonprofit organization CodePink has been calling on protesters to mobilize from Jan. 16-19 during “congressional days of action for Palestine.” On its website, CodePink calls for demonstrators to meet at the Senate Hart Building each day, adding, “We have been in the halls of Congress since October 7th. Since then, 64 members of Congress have called for a ceasefire and many interns have exposed their members who were not listening to the calls of the people.”
Yemen’s Houthis claim attack on ship in Red Sea as US confirms new strike
Malta-flagged ship hit by missile as US military says it launches a new strike against Houthi targets in Yemen. Yemen’s Houthi rebels have claimed responsibility for a missile attack on a Malta-flagged cargo ship in the Red Sea as the United States says it has launched a new strike on Houthi targets amid soaring tensions around the key waterway. “A Malta-flagged, Greek-owned bulk carrier was reportedly targeted and impacted with a missile while transiting the southern Red Sea northbound,” the maritime risk management company Ambrey said in an alert on Tuesday. The Houthis’ military spokesperson, Yahya Sarea, said in a statement that the Yemeni rebels targeted the Zografia ship with naval missiles on Tuesday as it was heading to Israel, resulting in a “direct hit”. There were no reports of injuries. The vessel had been heading north to the Suez Canal when it was attacked, the Greek Ministry of Shipping and Island Policy said. Earlier on Tuesday, the US military said it launched a new strike against the Houthis, hitting anti-ship missiles in the third assault on the Iran-backed group in recent days. According to a US Central Command statement, the strike destroyed four Houthi ballistic missiles that were prepared to launch and presented an imminent threat to merchant and US navy ships in the region. The Houthi attack on the Zografia involved an anti-ship ballistic missile, the statement said, adding that the ship continued its Red Sea transit after being hit and saying it remained seaworthy. The Iran-backed Houthis have attacked what they say are Israel-linked commercial vessels since November, disrupting maritime trade routes. The Houthis say the attacks are a response to Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. The group has threatened to expand the range of targets of its attacks in the Red Sea to include US ships in response to American and British strikes on its sites in Yemen. On Sunday, US forces shot down a Houthi cruise missile targeting a US destroyer, and on Monday, a US-owned cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman was hit by a missile. Al Jazeera’s Hashem Ahelbarra said the tensions in the Red Sea could “degenerate into something bigger, particularly the potential of war for an Iranian-American confrontation in Yemen”. “We’re talking about an extremely delicate situation in the Red Sea,” Ahelbarra said. Earlier, Qatar’s prime minister said liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments would be affected by Red Sea tensions and warned that the strikes on Yemen risk worsening the crisis. “LNG is … as any other merchant shipments. They will be affected by that [exchange with the Houthis],” Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani told the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. “There are alternative routes. Those alternative routes are not more efficient; they’re less efficient than the current route,” he added. On Monday, the Bloomberg news agency reported that at least five LNG vessels used by Qatar had stopped on their way to the Red Sea. “[Military intervention] will not bring an end for this, will not contain it. Ukraine’s Zelenskyy urges Western allies to step up pressure on Russia
The Ukrainian leader says Western hesitation in backing Kyiv is costing time and lives and could prolong the fighting for years. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged the West to tighten sanctions against Russian President Vladimir Putin and step up its support for Kyiv to ensure that Moscow does not succeed in its war. Western hesitation in supporting Ukraine and fears of an escalation in the war with Russia are costing time and lives and could prolong the fighting by years, Zelenskyy said on Tuesday in an emotional speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. With the West’s once-staunch wartime support for Kyiv now wavering amid political wrangling in Washington and Brussels, Zelenskyy said Europeans need to understand that Putin’s plans go beyond the war in Ukraine. “In fact, Putin embodies war. … He will not change. … We must change. We all must change to the extent that the madness that resides in this man’s head or any other aggressor’s head will not prevail,” the president said. Nearly two years after Russia launched its full-scale invasion, Zelenskyy said he strongly opposes freezing the conflict along its current lines. “Putin is a predator who is not satisfied with frozen products,” he said. He said sanctions on Moscow need to be enforced properly and the lack of sanctions on Russia’s nuclear sector are an illustration of the West’s weakness. European Union and NATO leaders echoed Zelenskyy’s concerns, telling the forum the West could not let up supplying Ukraine with weapons and money if it wants Kyiv to prevail. “Ukrainians need predictable financing throughout 2024 and beyond. They need a sufficient and sustained supply of weapons to defend Ukraine and regain its rightful territory,” European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen advised. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, also speaking at Davos, said support for Ukraine was not charity but an investment in the alliance’s own security. “We just have to stand by Ukraine. At some stage, Russia will understand that they are paying too high a price and sit down and agree to some kind of just peace – but we need to stand by Ukraine,” he stated. The forum is being held as Kyiv’s troops are going onto a more defensive footing after a major counteroffensive last year was unable to break through Russian defensive lines in Ukraine’s occupied south and east. Speaking hours after the Ukrainian president, Putin insisted his forces have the upper hand. “Not only has their counteroffensive failed, but the initiative is entirely in the hands of the Russian armed forces,” the Russian leader said in televised remarks. “If this continues, Ukraine’s statehood could be dealt an irreparable, very serious blow,” he added. Putin also shot down the possibility of peace talks with Ukraine, saying the country had advanced “prohibitive formulas for the peace process”. Kyiv is now focused on trying to secure Western assistance held up in the United States Congress and Brussels as it reforms its conscription effort to replenish manpower and addresses artillery shortages at the front. In a question-and-answer session after his speech, Zelenskyy said he had received “positive signals” about the unlocking of financial support from the EU. He said he hoped that the US would approve further aid within weeks. To drive home his point about the need to support Kyiv, he asked rhetorically what other European nation could provide a combat-ready army that could hold back Russian forces. “If anyone thinks this is only about Ukraine, they’re fundamentally mistaken. Possible directions and even timeline of a new Russian aggression beyond Ukraine become more and more obvious.” Zelenskyy met senior officials on the sidelines of the forum, including US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, Stoltenberg and international investors, such as executives from JPMorgan Chase. Trump attends New York court for defamation trial
Writer E Jean Carroll is accusing the former US president of defaming her in 2019 by denying he had attacked her in a department store dressing room. Former US President Donald Trump has arrived in a New York courtroom to defend himself for a second time against charges that he defamed writer E Jean Carroll after she accused him of rape. Trump, who has said he wants to testify at the civil trial, sat two tables behind Carroll, who is accusing him of defaming her in 2019 by denying he had attacked her in a Bergdorf Goodman department store dressing room in Manhattan. Carroll, 80, is seeking at least $10m in damages. US District Judge Lewis Kaplan, who is overseeing the case, told prospective jurors on Tuesday that they would only have to consider how much Trump should pay Carroll in damages, not whether the alleged assault took place or whether Trump lied about it. He added that the trial is expected to last three to five days. Former President Donald Trump arrives for a Fox News Channel town hall in Des Moines, Iowa, the US [Carolyn Kaster/AP] Trump has cast himself as the victim of political persecution and said Kaplan should dismiss the case. “Judge Kaplan should put this whole corrupt, Crooked Joe Biden-directed Election Interference attack on me immediately to rest,” he said on social media. “He should do it for america.” Trump has so far pleaded not guilty in four criminal cases that could potentially land him in prison before the November presidential election, including two that accuse him of trying to overturn the results of the 2020 election. He is also the defendant in at least two other civil cases. But Trump has already lost one defamation case against Carroll. In May last year, a jury ordered Trump to pay the former Elle columnist $5m for having sexually abused her during the encounter and defaming her. Trump has said that he did not know Carroll and that she made up the encounter to sell her memoir. He is also appealing the $5m award. Kaplan, who also presided over that case, said he has barred Trump from arguing that he did not defame or sexually assault Carroll or that she made up her account. In recent weeks, Trump has ramped up his attacks on Carroll, including saying she did not know the decade of their encounter. He also called Kaplan “terrible, biased, irrationally angry”. Trump may face an uphill fight to escape significant additional damages because of Kaplan’s pre-trial rulings. These include banning Trump from suggesting he did not rape Carroll, as New York’s penal law defines the term, because the first jury did not find that Trump committed rape. Kaplan has ruled that because Trump used his fingers in the assault, Carroll’s rape claim was “substantially true.” Trump also cannot discuss DNA evidence or Carroll’s sexual activities, or suggest that Democrats are bankrolling her case. Carroll is a Democrat. And as happened at the first trial, jurors will be able to see the 2005 video from Access Hollywood video where Trump graphically described the ability of famous people like himself to have sexual relations with beautiful women. Trump did not retract his comments when asked about them in a 2022 deposition. Kaplan has said the video could offer “useful insight into Mr. Trump’s state of mind” toward Carroll.
