The 3,900-metre runway is capable of handling large wide-body aircraft, making it an attractive option for international airlines. With an initial capacity to handle 12 million passengers annually, the airport is expected to expand to handle up to 120 million travellers per year.

The aircraft, manufactured in 1987, was carrying a patient, a doctor, a paramedic, two attendants, and two pilots. The pilot in command had around 1,400 flying hours, while the first officer had 450 hours. Redbird Airways acquired the aircraft in 2022.
