Rep. Mark Amodei wins Republican primary for Nevada’s 2nd congressional

Longtime Republican Congressman Mark Amodei has fended off a challenge from Former surgeon and real estate investor Dr. Fred Simon in Nevada’s 2nd congressional district. The Associated Press called the race. The deep red 2nd congressional district covers most of northern Nevada. Amodei has held the seat since 2011. He won the general election in 2022 over his Democratic opponent 59.7% to 37.8%. Given the conservative leaning of voters in the district, winning the primary is effectively the same as winning the general election. Before the election Amodei told the Reno Gazette Journal “If re-elected, I’ll use the seniority I’ve built up to magnify Nevada’s voice on all matters and make sure our issues are first priority and successfully dealt with. I want to see the lands bill pass, the post office not move to Sacramento and the Nevada Air National Guard unit have new J Model C-130s” Republicans currently hold a slim 218-213 majority in the House, but are aiming to grow that majority after losing a number of members to resignations, as well as one expulsion, over the past year. Incumbent Rep. Steven Horsford wins Dem nomination for key Nevada district

Rep. Steven Horsford, D-Nev., won his party’s nomination for a pivotal swing district in Tuesday’s primary election. The incumbent Democrat managed to fend off a primary challenge from young political newcomer Levy Schultz. Schultz challenged the Nevada representative because of what he described as the lack of affordable housing he encountered in Las Vegas. SUPREME COURT HISTORICAL SOCIETY BLASTS ‘SURREPTITIOUS’ RECORDING AS DEMS TARGET JUSTICE ALITO “The American people should not have to rent the American dream. We should be able to buy it,” he told the Las Vegas Review-Journal earlier this year. The challenger’s candidacy was considered a long-shot against Horsford. ‘LOOSE CANNON’: SENATE DEM ESCALATES ATTACK ON JUSTICE ALITO AFTER SECRET RECORDING The Democrat incumbent was first elected to the House in 2012. However, Horsford lost his seat to a Republican competitor after one term in 2014. But, after running again in 2018, he regained his seat and has been serving in it since. Nevada’s fourth district is being eyed by Republicans as a prime pick-up opportunity alongside 36 other districts nationwide. TRUMP TO MEET WITH HOUSE, SENATE REPUBLICANS IN DC THIS WEEK “Republicans are in the majority and on offense. We will grow our House majority by building strong campaigns around talented recruits in these districts who can communicate the dangers of Democrats’ extreme agenda,” National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) Chairman Richard Hudson, R-N.C., said in a statement earlier this year. “These House Democrats should be shaking in their boots.” However, this could prove difficult, as non-partisan political handicapper, the Cook Political Report, has rated the race “Likely Democratic.” MIKE LEE PRAISES TRUMP FOR RESISTING CLINTON LAWFARE, WARNS BIDEN OF SLIPPERY SLOPE Horsford does still have to contend with a competitive election landscape in the battleground state. This is magnified by the fact that he has to share the ballot with President Biden, who has racked up historically low approval ratings. Susie Lee hangs onto Dem nod in Nevada despite challenge from transgender opponent

Rep. Susie Lee, D-Nev., defeated her primary opponent in Nevada’s Tuesday election. Lee easily fended off a challenge from RockAthena Brittain, a biological man who identifies as a transgender woman. Her opponent did not receive any kind of backing or financial support from the Democratic Party, according to the Nevada Current. “I couldn’t even get the Human Rights Campaign to consider me for an endorsement,” Brittain told the outlet. SUPREME COURT HISTORICAL SOCIETY BLASTS ‘SURREPTITIOUS’ RECORDING AS DEMS TARGET JUSTICE ALITO “They said they like Susie Lee because she asks for advice on issues. Wouldn’t it be better if they supported someone who actually knows the issues and doesn’t have to ask?” Brittain said. Brittain’s campaign against the three-term congresswoman was considered a longshot given Lee’s name identification, relationships and Democratic Party infrastructure support. ‘LOOSE CANNON’: SENATE DEM ESCALATES ATTACK ON JUSTICE ALITO AFTER SECRET RECORDING Nevada’s third district is notably on the National Republican Congressional Committee’s (NRCC) target list of districts it hopes to get Republicans elected to in the 2024 elections. Lee’s district is alongside 36 others across the country that Republicans consider “prime pick-up opportunities.” TRUMP TO MEET WITH HOUSE, SENATE REPUBLICANS IN DC THIS WEEK “Republicans are in the majority and on offense. We will grow our House majority by building strong campaigns around talented recruits in these districts who can communicate the dangers of Democrats’ extreme agenda,” said NRCC Chairman Richard Hudson, R-N.C., earlier this year. “These House Democrats should be shaking in their boots.” While Republicans hope to end Democrats’ hold on the pivotal district, non-partisan political handicapper the Cook Political Report rates the race as “Lean Democratic,” predicting Lee with an enduring edge. The November election is made more competitive in Nevada by the fact that President Biden is also on the ballot. Biden has received some historically low approval ratings during his tenure, and swing state Nevada is embroiled in a close race between him and former President Trump. Jacky Rosen swiftly scores Nevada Democratic Senate nod ahead of ‘toss up’ election

Sen. Jacky Rosen, D-Nev., handily won Nevada’s Democratic Senate primary on Tuesday, setting her up for a difficult general election match come November in the swing state. The incumbent Democrat managed to easily defeat her opponents, Troy Walker and Mike Schaefer, in the election. SUPREME COURT HISTORICAL SOCIETY BLASTS ‘SURREPTITIOUS’ RECORDING AS DEMS TARGET JUSTICE ALITO November will be Rosen’s first reelection battle as a senator, and her seat is not guaranteed, with Nevada’s Senate race being moved to a “toss up” earlier this year by non-partisan political handicapper the Cook Political Report. ‘LOOSE CANNON’: SENATE DEM ESCALATES ATTACK ON JUSTICE ALITO AFTER SECRET RECORDING Prior to running for Senate in 2017, she served as representative of Nevada’s 3rd Congressional District in the House. According to Rosen, late former Senate Majority Leader and Democratic powerhouse Harry Reid encouraged her to run for the Senate seat. She managed to defeat incumbent Senator Dean Heller, who was considered incredibly vulnerable at the time. TRUMP TO MEET WITH HOUSE, SENATE REPUBLICANS IN DC THIS WEEK “He told me to think about it and that’s what I did when I came home to talk to my husband,” she told the Nevada Independent in 2017. MIKE LEE PRAISES TRUMP FOR RESISTING CLINTON LAWFARE, WARNS BIDEN OF SLIPPERY SLOPE However, Rosen now appears to be in a similar position to that of Heller, trying to hang onto her seat in an ever-fluid battleground state. She also faces the difficulty of running alongside President Biden, who has managed to receive historically low approval ratings and is at risk of losing Nevada in the general election. Rosen’s race is one of only three “toss-ups” in the Senate elections, alongside Ohio and Montana. Each race features a Democratic incumbent, putting the caucus at a significant disadvantage, given Republican incumbents are considered relatively safe. She will face off against the winner of the much more competitive Republican Senate primary, who is expected to be front-runner former U.S. Army Capt. Sam Brown. Brown was recruited and encouraged to run by the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) and received a late endorsement from former President Trump just two days before the election. Trump had withheld his seal of approval throughout the primary campaign as Brown competed against former Trump official Jeff Gunter.
War veteran Sam Brown wins GOP primary in top battleground Senate race

Afghanistan war veteran Sam Brown has won Nevada’s Republican Senate primary and will now face off against a tough incumbent Democrat in the November general election. Brown led former U.S. Ambassador to Iceland Jeffrey Gunter by around 24 percentage points when The Associated Press called the race. The campaign turned increasingly ugly in the months preceding the election, with Gunter and Brown battling over who was the true MAGA and America First candidate in the race. However, a late endorsement from former President Trump appears to have helped solidify Brown’s status as the frontrunner and boosted him over the finish line. UGLY GOP PRIMARY COMES TO AN END AS SWING STATE VOTERS SET TO DECIDE WHO WILL FACE TOUGH DEMOCRAT INCUMBENT Brown also has the backing of Nevada’s popular Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo, a figure who largely stays out of the spotlight and rarely weighs in on such instances of increased national attention. Brown will now face incumbent Democratic Sen. Jacky Rosen in the November general election, where Democrats hope her well-financed operation will keep the Silver State firmly blue in a year Republicans are expected to perform well across the country. WATCH: TRUMP RALLYGOERS REVEAL WHO THEY WANT AS VICE PRESIDENT Little polling has been conducted on the race, but a New York Times poll released last month showed the two tied at 41% with a number still undecided. Democrats hold a slim 51-49 majority in the Senate, and the Nevada race is being viewed as a top flip opportunity for Republicans, along with races in West Virginia, Montana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Maryland and Arizona. Republicans lost a bid to unseat incumbent Democrat Sen. Catherine Cortez-Masto by less than a percentage point in 2022. Elections analysts rate the race as either “tilt Democratic,” “lean Democratic,” or a “toss-up.” Get the latest updates from the 2024 campaign trail, exclusive interviews and more at our Fox News Digital election hub.
House GOP lawmakers grill ex-New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo over COVID nursing home deaths

Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo faced a tough grilling from House GOP lawmakers Tuesday over his handling of COVID-19 in nursing homes during the height of the pandemic. Cuomo visited Capitol Hill for a closed-door interview with the House select subcommittee investigating the coronavirus pandemic. Lawmakers zeroed in on a March 25, 2020, executive order by the governor that restricted nursing homes from refusing to admit or readmit residents “solely based on confirmed or suspect[ed] diagnosis of COVID-19.” A report released in March 2022 by the New York state comptroller found Cuomo’s Health Department “was not transparent in its reporting of COVID-19 deaths in nursing homes” and it “understated the number of deaths at nursing homes by as much as 50%” during some points of the pandemic. CUOMO FINALLY FORCED TO TELL WHOLE TRUTH ABOUT COVID-19 DECISIONS THAT COST THOUSANDS OF LIVES Cuomo has pushed back on these claims, insisting New York’s health department was following Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) guidance issued by the Trump administration before Cuomo’s order. In his opening remarks, Cuomo said “any serious review must stop asking political questions and start asking fact-based ones.” He pointed out that New York was “No. 39 in terms of pro rata nursing home deaths [despite the state] being ground zero for COVID.” He also accused the Trump administration of targeting Democrat-led states “despite both red and blue states issuing” the same guidelines. GOP lawmakers held a post-hearing press conference at which they accused Cuomo of deflecting blame. LIBERAL NY TIMES COLUMNIST ADMITS MEDIA, PUBLIC HEALTH WERE ‘TOO DISMISSIVE’ ON LAB LEAK THEORY “I felt like the governor was defensive throughout most of the day, often putting blame on other people rather than himself. [He] didn’t seem to be taking a lot of responsibility for the things that were happening,” Chair Brad Wenstrup, R-Ohio, said. Rep. Mike Lawler, R-N.Y., called Cuomo a “phony” and a “fraud” who “put our most vulnerable population at risk, resulting in the death of over 15,000 seniors. “And it was Andrew Cuomo who covered it up,” Lawler added. “It wasn’t just the directive which was bad enough and idiotic and resulted in the death of the 15,000-plus seniors. It was Andrew Cuomo, for political purposes, who directed the state government to cover up the death toll.” GOP conference Chair Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., said Tuesday’s deposition “was a step in delivering accountability and delivering long overdue answers to those families who are still mourning the loss of their loved ones.” Speaking to reporters after the deposition, Cuomo said the federal government was ultimately to blame for the severity of the pandemic. “We have two very different opinions on what happened during COVID,” Cuomo told a reporter. “I think the federal government failed this nation. And it was abysmal. How did COVID get to the U.S. in December and nobody knew? How did it take so many months before we had … basic testing in place? How did we have a president running around saying, ‘It’s going to be gone when the weather gets warm?’ … who then admits to a reporter that he purposely downplayed it?” Rich Azzopardi, a spokesman for Cuomo, told Fox News Digital the governor “presented fact-based evidence that New York, at the end of the day, was the 39th state for pro rata in nursing home deaths in 2020 despite the fact that it started off the hardest hit.” “We worked day and night to protect New Yorkers and save lives even though the ‘experts’ kept changing the facts on the ground. We were grappling with international PPE shortages and no national response,” Azzopardi said. “The fact that this partisan farce was allowed to go on, and they continue telling their fact-less stories, especially in order to help their marginal members who weren’t even at the hearing, tells you what a joke this was.” Wenstrup subpoenaed Cuomo in March to appear before his committee. A letter accompanying the subpoena said Cuomo’s testimony “is vital to our investigation into the effectiveness of federal guidance and regulations implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic regarding the protection of nursing home residents.” “Further, this investigation may inform legislation to enhance the federal scientific guidance process, including the drafting, publication, and implementation of guidances originating from CMS or CDC,” the letter said. California group secures signatures to land Prop 47 reform penalizing criminals on November ballot

California Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber, Ph.D. notified county election officials on Tuesday that petitioners had garnered more than enough signatures to place a measure to reform Proposition 47 on the November ballot. Prop 47, a voter-approved initiative passed in 2014, loosened the penalties for drug and theft crimes in California and has been blamed for California’s rampant theft problems. Californians for Safer Communities, a bipartisan group made up of law enforcement, elected officials and businesses, said it had collected more than 900,000 signatures in support of the proposed amendment to reform Prop 47 in order to increase penalties for criminals. On Tuesday, the Secretary of State’s office notified election officials the measure had become eligible to be on the ballot. CALIFORNIA DEMOCRATS ‘PLAYING DIRTY TRICKS’ TO KEEP PROP 47 REFORM OFF BALLOT, GOP LEADER SAYS In order to become eligible, petitioners need 5% of the total votes cast for governor in the November 2022 general election, or 546,651 signatures. The measure can also become eligible via random sampling of petition signatures if the sampling projects the number of valid signatures is greater than 110% of the required number, or 601,317 projected valid signatures. The group collected a total of 910,441 signatures, and through random sampling, 652,100 were considered valid, exceeding the required threshold. NEWSOM PROPOSES DEFUNDING LAW ENFORCEMENT, PRISONS, PUBLIC SAFETY AS CALIFORNIA FACES MASSIVE DEFICIT On June 27, 2024, Weber will certify the initiative for the Nov. 5, 2024 ballot, unless the proponents withdraw the measure prior to certification. Prop 47 made several crimes, including shoplifting, grand theft and receiving stolen property, a misdemeanor instead of a felony if the value of the property did not exceed $950. It also lowered the penalty for the personal use of most illegal drugs below a certain weight. Many law enforcement officials have blamed the measure for the uptick in theft and smash-and-grabs that have plagued California in the years since the COVID-19 pandemic. Around the same time, California became synonymous with smash-and-grab crimes as videos of groups of thieves brazenly ransacking stores gained traction online. SACRAMENTO MASS SHOOTING SUSPECT FOUND DEAD IN JAIL CELL WHILE AWAITING TRIAL California Democrats, including Gov. Gavin Newsom, do not support the effort and are pushing some public safety bills circulating throughout the state capital that attempt to address organized retail theft, car break-ins and other crimes. The Democrats prefer those bills go before voters instead of the Prop 47 reform measure. Some Democrats said they plan to introduce inoperability clauses into the set of proposed public safety bills to prevent them from going into effect if voters approve the Prop 47 reforms. They contend that it’s a way to ensure there aren’t any inconsistencies in the law. Fox News Digital has reached out to the California Democratic Party and Californians for Safer Communities. California has some of the toughest thresholds for prosecutors to charge suspects with a felony for theft up to $950, in contrast to other states that have higher thresholds, Newsom’s office told Fox News Digital. Last year, the Democratic governor announced more than $267 million to increase arrests and prosecutions for organized retail crime across the state. Earlier this year, Newsom recalled how he witnessed a shoplifter stealing from Target in Sacramento. He confronted a store employee moments later. “I said, ‘why didn’t you stop him,’” Newsom said during a Zoom meeting on mental health in January. “She goes, ‘oh, the governor.’ Swear to God, true story on my mom’s grave. ‘The governor lowered the threshold, there’s no accountability.’ I said that’s just not true.” Still, the governor’s office said that while Prop 47 is eligible for the ballot today, it will not qualify until June 27. McMaster-backed nurse practitioner advances to runoff in South Carolina GOP primary to succeed Rep. Duncan

Sheri Biggs, a nurse practitioner who won the backing of Gov. Henry McMaster, advanced to a runoff in the crowded race for the Republican nomination to replace outgoing GOP Rep. Jeff Duncan in South Carolina’s 3rd Congressional District. Biggs was among seven Republicans in contention, but no true frontrunner emerged ahead of the primary. Biggs, a lieutenant colonel in the Air National Guard ran as a “pro-life, pro-Second Amendment lifelong Republican.” WIFE OF SOUTH CAROLINA REPUBLICAN CONGRESSMAN FILES FOR DIVORCE, ALLEGES EXTRAMARITAL AFFAIR “I’m running for Congress to continue my lifetime of service and treat Washington’s health problem with bold, conservative, servant leadership,” she said on her campaign website. Jones had been endorsed by McMaster and had also highlighted her commitment to work with former President Trump, although Trump backed another candidate in the race. “Sheri Biggs epitomizes the greatness of the people of South Carolina — an unwavering belief in God, a commitment to selfless service and a true resolve to fight for our shared values,” McMaster said in his endorsement. “While her distinguished military and health care careers are truly admirable, her passion to help heal our nation’s fiscal, mental and spiritual health problems is exactly what we need representing us in Congress. Sheri Biggs will work with President Trump to secure our border, protect tax dollars, defend our conservative values, keep the promises to our veterans and drain the swamp.” CRUCIAL PRIMARY RACES TO BE DECIDED TUESDAY, SETTING UP FIGHT FOR BALANCE OF POWER Duncan decided not to run again for the seat after seven terms. Duncan’s wife filed for divorce last year, accusing him of several affairs. “At some point in a career, one needs to step aside and allow others to bring fresh ideas and abilities into the fight for liberty,” Duncan said in a statement in January. Trump had backed Pastor Mark Burns who also advanced to the runoff, a longtime supporter, in the race. Former Sen. Lindsey Graham staffer Kevin Bishop, state Rep. Stewart Jones and businessman Franky Franco were among those who had also thrown their hats in the ring. The Democratic primary in the 3rd District is between high school science teacher Frances Guldner and Byron Best, who manages a Sherwin Williams paint store in Greenwood. The district is a mostly rural area in the northern and western part of the state. A Democrat has not won the district since Graham flipped the seat in 1994.
