Rep. Armstrong wins GOP nomination to succeed Gov. Doug Burgum in North Dakota
Rep. Kelly Armstrong, R-N.D., on Tuesday won the race for the Republican nomination to succeed Gov. Doug Burgum, after promising continuity with the governor, who is now being eyed as a potential vice presidential candidate. Armstrong beat Lt. Gov. Tammy Miller for the Republican nomination after winning the party’s endorsement earlier this year. Miller had won the backing of Burgum, who is reported to be in the running to become former President Trump’s running mate. CRUCIAL PRIMARY RACES TO BE DECIDED TUESDAY, SETTING UP FIGHT FOR BALANCE OF POWER Burgum is not term limited but announced he won’t seek a third term. Armstrong was elected to the House in 2018 after serving in the state Senate. He is also an attorney and former state GOP chairman. “The short answer is I want to get home and start working — I miss people. I miss my friends. I miss my neighbors. I miss being in North Dakota, I really do,” Armstrong said in an interview with The Associated Press in January. “Serving the state in Congress has been an absolute, the greatest privilege of my life, but I really want to come home. I miss my friends in the Legislature. I miss the people who are more interested in solving problems than finding some mediocre social media fame.” Armstrong becomes the favored candidate to win in the general election. Democratic state Sen. Merrill Piepkorn and independent Michael Coachman are also running for the governor’s office. Mark Burns, an evangelical pastor backed by former President Trump, has advanced to a runoff for Republican nomination for South Carolina’s 3rd Congressional District to replace outgoing Rep. Jeff Duncan. Seven Republicans were vying for the typically Republican seat, but no true frontrunner had emerged ahead of the primary. Ultimately, Trump’s endorsement may provide a boost to get Burns the GOP nomination. Trump cited Burns’ positions on border security, upholding the rule of law, the economy and defending “our always under siege Second Amendment.” Burns has touted his positions on the border and pushing back against the “woke” agenda. He had also loudly touted his endorsement by President Trump on his campaign website. A former member of the South Carolina National Guard, Burns set up a church in Easley and has embraced the label by Time Magazine as “Donald Trump’s favorite pastor.” CRUCIAL PRIMARY RACES TO BE DECIDED TUESDAY, SETTING UP FIGHT FOR BALANCE OF POWER Duncan decided not to run again for the seat after seven terms. Duncan’s wife filed for divorce last year, accusing him of several affairs. “At some point in a career, one needs to step aside and allow others to bring fresh ideas and abilities into the fight for liberty,” Duncan said in a statement in January. South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster had endorsed nurse practitioner Sheri Biggs, while former Sen. Lindsey Graham staffer Kevin Bishop, state House Rep. Stewart Jones and businessman Franky Franco also put their hats in the ring. The Democratic primary in the 3rd District is between high school science teacher Frances Guldner and Byron Best, who manages a Sherwin Williams paint store in Greenwood. The district is a mostly rural area in the northern and western part of the state. A Democrat has not won the district since Graham flipped the seat in 1994. House GOP’s razor-thin majority gets a little wider with Ohio special election victory
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., got a bit of breathing room on Tuesday night when Republican Michael Rulli won the special election to replace retired Rep. Bill Johnson, R-Ohio. Rulli is an Ohio state senator and a small business owner who touts himself as a “big natural gas guy,” according to the Ohio Capital Journal. His family started and runs Youngstown-based grocery stores called Rulli Brothers Market, his campaign website stated. He was also president of the Leetonia School Board in Northern Ohio. US ENERGY FUTURE ‘UNDER THREAT’ FROM BIDEN POLICIES: GOP REPORT Rulli’s website also lists “priorities for Ohio families,” which include “energy independence,” the “right to bear arms” and “election integrity,” among other issues. The local Ohio official was the favorite to win in the Buckeye State’s deep red 6th congressional district, which former President Trump won by more than 40 points in 2020. Maine State Rep. Austin Theriault, a Republican better known as a former NASCAR driver and 2019 ARCA Menards Series champion, was projected Tuesday to win the Republican nomination for Maine’s 2nd Congressional District. He defeated Marine veteran Mike Soboleski in the district, which covers a plurality of the state, including much of its rural expanse. Theriault, who was endorsed by former President Trump, said during his campaign that people are looking for candidates with experience in business, like the presumptive GOP presidential nominee and himself. Theriault’s hometown of Fort Kent is known both as the “other” ‘Mile 0’ of US Route 1 — versus Key West, Fla. — and a key international border crossing. To that end, Theriault made border security a hallmark of his campaign. TOP HOUSE REPUBLICAN ENDORSES FORMER NASCAR DRIVER IN CONTENTIOUS MAINE RACE “I know that we live thousands of miles away from the southern border, but it’s a huge issue because of the drugs coming across and the human trafficking,” he told WMTW. Theriault, who also raced a handful of times in NASCAR’s marquee cup series, will face “blue dog” Rep. Jared Golden, D-Maine in November. Golden, who notably split his 2019 votes on Trump’s two impeachment counts at the time, represents a district that also leans to the right for New England. Golden has been in the seat since he defeated Rep. Bruce Poliquin, R-Maine, in 2018. Golden’s win over Poliquin at the time was an early test of the controversial ranked-choice voting practice adopted by a growing list of states since then. A federal judge on Tuesday struck down federal protections for LGBTQ students, saying the Biden administration attempted to rewrite the federal law. U.S. District Judge Reed O’Connor in Fort Worth, Texas, said officials tried to re-write federal law barring sex discrimination in schools, applying it to LGBTQ students, Reuters reported. The ruling came amid a lawsuit filed by Texas’ Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton. DOJ CHARGES TEXAS DOCTOR AFTER HE BLEW THE WHISTLE ON GENDER-AFFIRMING CARE FOR MINORS Paxton argued that legal guidance issued by the U.S. Department of Education three years ago was invalid because the agency lacked the power to adopt it and that it could not be enforced in Texas. “Joe Biden’s unlawful effort to weaponize Title IX for his extremist agenda has been stopped in its tracks,” Paxton said in a statement. “Threatening to withhold education funding by forcing states to accept ‘transgender’ policies that put women in danger was plainly illegal. Texas has prevailed on behalf of the entire nation.” It said schools could be denied federal funding for discriminating against students based on their gender identity or sexual orientation. Examples of discrimination include requiring students to use bathrooms and other facilities that correspond to the sex they were assigned at birth. “To allow Defendants’ unlawful action to stand would be to functionally rewrite Title IX in a way that shockingly transforms American education and usurps a major question from Congress,” wrote O’Connor. Fox News Digital has reached out to the Department of Education and Justice Department. In April, the DOE adopted regulations applying Title IX to LGBTQ students. Tuesday’s decision does not affect those rules, which Texas and other states are challenging in court, Reuters reported.

The Associated Press on Tuesday projects that Mace will win renomination in South Carolina’s competitive Low Country-based 1st Congressional District by defeating Catherine Templeton, a former director of South Carolina’s labor agency who ran unsuccessfully for governor in 2018, and Marine Corps veteran Bill Young. Templeton was backed by millions spent by outside groups aligned with former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. “We did it – You, Lowcountry voters did it! A thousand times over – THANK YOU!,” Mace wrote in a social media post moments after her race was called. Additionally, a former Mace chief of staff briefly launched a primary challenge against his former boss.
