Johnson spars with White House over border funding claims: ‘Desperate’
House Speaker Mike Johnson is pushing back against White House claims that Republicans have an “anti-border security record” and have sought to cut Border Patrol agent numbers — with Johnson dismissing the claims as “desperate” as the country deals with a historic migrant crisis at the southern border. “From the start of President Biden’s term, House Republicans have voted for significant year over year funding increases for Border Patrol and ICE beyond what his administration has requested. And from the start of President Biden’s term, his Administration has implemented policies that have undermined security and created a humanitarian crisis at the Southern border,” the memo from Johnson’s office said. “Now, in a desperate attempt to shift blame for a crisis their policies have induced, they have argued it’s a funding problem. Clearly, they have no facts to back up their claim,” it said. EX-DHS OFFICIALS BACK JOHNSON’S AGGRESSIVE BORDER STANCE IN FUNDING FIGHT, SAY GOP MUST HAVE ‘CLEAR RESOLVE’ The White House repeated claims this week that Republicans had voted to eliminate over 2,000 Border Patrol agents and erode the federal government’s capacity to seize fentanyl. “Actions speak louder than words. House Republicans’ anti-border security record is defined by attempting to cut Customs and Border Protection personnel, opposing President Biden’s record-breaking border security funding, and refusing to take up the President’s supplemental funding request,” spokesperson Andrew Bates said. The 2,000 CBP cut is based on an Office of Management and Budget analysis of the Republican budget plan from last year, which found that funding cuts would lead to a staffing cut as it laid out. The White House also accused the House Republicans of failing to work with the Senate and administration to secure agreement on a supplemental funding agreement for Ukraine, Israel and border aid. The White House has requested $14 billion for the border as part of that proposal. SPEAKER JOHNSON FLOATS MEETING WITH BIDEN ON BORDER CRISIS “Biden’s proposed funding to hire thousands of new Border Patrol agents, hire more asylum officers and immigration judges, provide local communities hosting migrants additional grant funding, and invest in cutting edge technology that is critical to stopping deadly fentanyl from entering our country,” Bates said. “On Day One, President Biden proposed a comprehensive immigration reform plan and followed up by delivering record border security funding every single year of his term. House Republicans have obstructed his reform proposal and consistently voted against his unprecedented border security funding year after year, hamstringing our border security in the name of extreme, partisan demands,” he said. Those claims were echoed by White House Press Secretary Karine Jean Pierre this week, who accused Republicans of conducting “political stunts.” But Johnson’s office pointed to fact checks that have rated the claim about CBP staffing cuts false or mostly false, including from PolitiFact, which called the claim about staffing cuts “more of a guess” and noted the measures don’t explicitly say they would cut staffing in the way the White House described. Instead, Johnson’s office pointed to appropriations bills that have increased border security funding “including Border Patrol agents at the highest level ever funded, and ICE custody operations at a level more than ever previously appropriated.” “Funding for Border Patrol operations and related Southwest border requirements has increased by over $2.28B, or 47%, since FY21. Similar ICE operations funding has increased by $860M, and in FY23, Congress rejected cuts the President requested to ICE funding that would have significantly cut detention capacity and overall immigration enforcement operations,” the memo says. US-MEXICO MIGRATION TALKS INCLUDED BENEFITS OF ‘REGULARIZING’ ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS LIVING IN US Meanwhile, it claims that of the $14 billion funding request, most of it falls into management and processing, as well as $3 billion to non-government organizations and cash assistance for migrants, rather than border operations — arguing that just 17% goes to Border Patrol. “The President’s supplemental request is little more than misdirection and false advertising that would do little to secure the border,” the memo says. After Johnson’s memo, Bates responded and doubled down, saying the Johnson memo proves “we struck a nerve by highlighting House Republicans’ actions to eliminate 2,000 Border Patrol agents and weaken our crackdown on fentanyl.” He argued that the Default on America Act would have forced the cuts as he described and pointed to comments from Johnson saying it would “usher in the largest spending cuts in history” and pointed to similar proposals, including those of some Republicans to defund DHS entirely. “Speaker Johnson and House Republicans left Washington for an early vacation in mid-December while President Biden and Senators from both parties continued working to find common ground,” he said. “The President is focused on securing the resources he requested in the National Security supplemental to secure our border, including more Border Patrol agents, asylum officers, immigration judges, and technology to catch fentanyl.” Talks are still ongoing between negotiators and the administration, with Republicans seeking more limits on asylum and the use of parole to allow migrants into the interior. Johnson visited the southern border this week with more than 60 Republican lawmakers, and said that H.R. 2 — the House Republican border security bill passed last year that includes limits on releases, tighten the credible fear standard, re-establish the “Remain in Mexico” policy and restart wall construction among other provisions — is the “necessary ingredient.” “Because it has provisions that fix each of these problems and these things work together,” he said. Democrats in the Senate have ruled out H.R. 2 and similar proposals as a non-starter. Even some reported concessions by the Biden administration, including the establishment of a Title 42-style removal authority, have been met with anger from some liberal Democrats. The administration has also said negotiations are moving forward. “Our negotiations with the Senate continued over the holidays, and we continue to be encouraged by the progress being made. And while we are not there yet, we believe we are moving in the right direction,” a senior administration official told reporters
Wyoming judge dismisses effort to bar Trump from ballot
A Wyoming district court judge dismissed a lawsuit aiming to remove former President Donald Trump and Republican Sen. Cynthia Lummis from election ballots, sparking celebration from Wyoming Republican Secretary of State Chuck Gray. “I am extremely pleased with Judge Westby’s decision to dismiss Mr. Newcomb’s outrageously wrong and repugnant lawsuit to remove Donald Trump and Cynthia Lummis from the ballot in Wyoming,” Gray said in a press release provided to Fox News Digital. “I have been working to make sure that Donald Trump will be able to be on the ballot, and I am happy our motion to dismiss this lawsuit was granted. I will continue to fight against this nationwide effort in order to protect the integrity of our elections and ensure that the people of Wyoming can choose who to elect for themselves.” Retired lawyer Tim Newcomb filed a lawsuit in November, Newcomb v. Chuck Gray, with the Albany County District Court to remove Trump and Lummis from future ballots, arguing that they are “traitors” under a clause in the 14th Amendment in relation to January 6, 2021, when Trump supporters breached the U.S. Capitol. TOP WYOMING OFFICIAL SLAMS BRAKES ON COURT LABELING TRUMP ‘INSURRECTIONIST’: ‘OUTRAGEOUS’ In a court filing late last month, Newcomb also called on Gray to resign “for his attempt at stochastic terror against Wyoming’s Judiciary, thenapologize [sic] to the Court and its staff personnel,” court filings state, according to the Cowboy State Daily. TRUMP ASKS SUPREME COURT TO KEEP NAME ON COLORADO BALLOT “Mr. Newcomb’s screed reflects the ravings of a radical left-wing mad man,” Gray told the outlet last month. “Its [sic] another example of the tactics of lunatics of the radical Left with their outrageously wrong attempts at election interference.” Newcomb, in his court filings, also claimed that the District Court judge presiding over the case could face death threats if she were to side with him in the case. “In candor to the Court, death threats — if the Court agrees with the Petitioner’s Verified Complaint . . . against the Court, her Honor, litigants, witnesses, staff personnel and their families, will come,” Newcomb’s filing states, the Cowboy State Daily reported. Lummis also celebrated the dismissal in a comment to Fox Digital, calling the suit “frivolous.” “Elections in Wyoming are decided by the people of the Cowboy State, and I am glad this frivolous lawsuit to remove myself and Donald Trump from future ballots was dismissed. Efforts to remove candidates from the ballot are a direct attack on the freedom of voters to choose their elected officials and undermines the integrity of our elections,” Lummis told Fox News Digital on Friday. Ahead of this year’s election, other states are in the midst of legal battles over whether to remove Trump’s name from the ballot, which Gray has repeatedly fought against. In Colorado, Gray filed an amicus curiae brief, otherwise known as a “friend of the court brief,” with the Colorado Supreme Court to rectify a lower court in the state labeling Trump an “insurrectionist” in relation to the January 6 protests at the U.S. Capitol. CALIFORNIA SECRETARY OF STATE LEAVES TRUMP ON THE BALLOT AFTER CALLS TO REMOVE HIM “As chief election officials of our states, [Secretaries of State] have to stand up for the electoral process in our republic, and this is pivotal to ensuring the integrity of our elections,” Gray told Fox News Digital in a phone interview last month after filing the amicus brief. “I ran on election integrity, and that’s why the people of Wyoming voted me into office. And I’m following through on that, and defending the truth here, and making sure that these outrageous, frivolous lawsuits that the radical left is bringing and trying to remove President Trump from the ballot, that they don’t succeed.” TRUMP DISQUALIFIED FROM MAINE 2024 REPUBLICAN PRIMARY BALLOT The Colorado Supreme Court ultimately ruled to bar Trump from the ballot, with justices writing in their opinion that Trump “incited and encouraged” the use of violence to prevent the peaceful transfer of power on January 6, 2021, following the 2020 presidential election. Trump on Wednesday asked the Supreme Court to overturn the Colorado Supreme Court’s ruling, arguing that the “Colorado Supreme Court has no authority to deny” him a place on the state’s ballot. Maine has also barred Trump from the ballot, which the former president is appealing in state court, while efforts are underway in other states such as Illinois, Oregon and Massachusetts to remove Trump’s name.
Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson’s family, attorney say medical negligence led to her death
The family of late Texas Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson is now intending to file a medical negligence lawsuit against a Dallas-based healthcare provider and rehabilitation facility claiming that she died after getting an infection while lying in her own feces following back surgery. Johnson, who was the first registered nurse elected to Congress, passed away at age 89 on December 31 at her Dallas home. Les Weisbrod, her family’s attorney and Johnson’s longtime friend, said at a news conference on Thursday that her death certificate listed the Democrat’s cause of death as osteomyelitis of the lumbar spine. “If she had gotten proper care at that facility, she would be here today,” Johnson’s son Kirk said when talking about the incident that allegedly unfolded at the Baylor Scott & White Institute for Rehabilitation. On September 21, her son found her lying in her own feces and urine at the rehabilitation facility, according to a press release from Weisbrod’s office. Kirk Johnson said at the news conference Thursday that he had gone to the facility after his mother called to tell him she was getting no response from the call button. He said he arrived about 10 minutes later. LONGTIME TEXAS DEMOCRAT EDDIE BERNICE JOHNSON DIES “Deplorable,” he said. “She was being unattended to. She was screaming out in pain and for help.” The press release said that when Kirk Johnson couldn’t find any nurses on the floor, he went to the administration office, and the CEO accompanied him to his mother’s room. When they arrived, staff members were cleaning up the feces. Weisbrod’s office said that Eddie Bernice Johnson’s orthopedic surgeon wrote in his record that Johnson began having “copious purulent drainage from the low lumbar incision” three days after the alleged incident, the Associated Press reports. The surgeon reportedly performed a surgical repair on the infected wound before Johnson was moved to a nursing facility on October 18 and then to her home on hospice care in mid-December, the AP added, citing the press release. The news release also said that laboratory wound culture reports showed organisms directly related to feces, according to the AP. Weisbrod reportedly has given notice to Baylor Scott & White Health System and Baylor Scott & White Institute for Rehabilitation that Johnson’s family is preparing to file a medical negligence lawsuit. FORMER KENTUCKY GOV. JULIAN CARROLL DEAD AT 92 Eddie Bernice Johnson was one of the most prominent Democrats from the Dallas area. She served in the U.S. House for three decades after becoming the first registered nurse elected to Congress and the first Black chief psychiatric nurse at Dallas’ Veterans Affairs hospital. Johnson went on to become the first Black woman to chair the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology, and she also led the Congressional Black Caucus. She left office in January 2023 after repeatedly delaying her retirement. Before Congress, she served in the Texas legislature. President Biden said Johnson was a “dedicated nurse, state legislator, and longtime U.S. congresswoman with immense courage and a commitment to the promise of America.” Fox News’ Bradford Betz and the Associated Press contributed to this report.
New York AG seeks over $370M from Trump, co-defendants for ‘ill-gotten gains’
New York Attorney General Letitia James is seeking over $370 million from former President Donald Trump and his co-defendants in his highly publicized civil fraud trial. James demanded the financial penalty as repayment for profits she argues were illicitly gained, according to a document filed to the court on Friday. The attorney general argues, “The conclusion that defendants intended to defraud when preparing and certifying Trump’s SFCs is inescapable; the myriad deceptive schemes they employed to inflate asset values and conceal facts were so outrageous that they belie innocent explanation.” Back in September, Engoron ruled that Trump and the Trump Organization had committed fraud while building his real estate empire, by deceiving banks, insurers and others, by overvaluing his assets and exaggerating his net worth on paperwork used in making deals and securing financing. “The myriad deceptive schemes they employed to inflate asset values and conceal facts were so outrageous that they belie innocent explanation,” James wrote. Trump and his family have denied any wrongdoing and have claimed that the former president has repeatedly said his assets were actually undervalued. Wayne LaPierre announces resignation as NRA chief
FIRST ON FOX – Longtime National Rifle Association chief Wayne LaPierre announced his resignation Friday, Fox News Digital has learned. “With pride in all that we have accomplished, I am announcing my resignation from the NRA,” LaPierre said in the NRA’s press release, which was exclusively obtained by Fox News Digital. “I’ve been a card-carrying member of this organization for most of my adult life, and I will never stop supporting the NRA and its fight to defend Second Amendment freedom. My passion for our cause burns as deeply as ever.” NRA President Charles Cotton said during the board meeting Friday in Irving, Texas, that he accepted LaPierre’s resignation. LaPierre, 74, cited health reasons as motivation behind the departure. The resignation will take effect Jan. 31. Andrew Arulanandam, the NRA’s executive and head of general operations, will serve as interim CEO and executive vice president of the NRA. James – who before being elected the state’s AG, vowed to take on the NRA and slammed the group as a “terrorist organization” – brought forth a lawsuit in 2020 accusing NRA leadership of violating state and federal laws to divert millions of dollars to their own pockets. NRA FIGHTS BACK, FILES ITS OWN SUIT AGAINST NY ATTORNEY GENERAL SEEKING TO DISBAND ORGANIZATION The NRA has repeatedly hit back that James’s suit was an example of her weaponizing the powers of her office “to silence” the Second Amendment group due to her “animus” for the organization. “The NRA continues its defense of a lawsuit by the New York Attorney General, and LaPierre is an individual defendant in that action. It is well-known that the NYAG vowed to pursue the NRA when she was candidate for her office and, upon being elected, filed a lawsuit to dissolve the Association in August 2020. Garland says US witnessing ‘deeply disturbing spike in threats’ against public servants
Attorney General Merrick Garland is warning Friday that the U.S. is “witnessing a deeply disturbing spike in threats against those who serve the public,” as the country continues to battle a “scourge in violent crime.” Garland spoke in Washington, D.C., as he gathered leaders from the Justice Department’s law enforcement components – including the FBI, ATF, DEA and U.S. Marshals Service – to discuss combating violent crime and prosecuting and deterring those who would criminally threaten public servants. “Violent crime is not just a threat to people’s physical safety, it is a threat to their ability to freely go about their daily lives. Violent crime isolates people and communities. It deepens the fractures in our public life, and when it is not addressed can undermine people’s trust in the government and in each other,” Garland said. “This department and our state and local partners will not rest until every community in our country is safe from the scourge of violent crime,” he continued. “At the same time that we are seeing an encouraging downward trend in violent crime, we are also witnessing a deeply disturbing spike in threats against those who serve the public.” FLORIDA MAN ARRESTED FOR THREATS TO KILL ERIC SWALWELL AND HIS CHILDREN Garland noted that the FBI has indicated the number of homicides fell 6% nationally between 2021 and 2022, while the Major Cities Chiefs Association of Police Executives has reported a double digit decrease in the number of murders across 69 major cities through September 2023 as compared to the same time period during 2020. However, “this is not a time to relax our efforts,” he said. “We have so much more to do.” “In May 2021, we launched a violent crime reduction strategy aimed at addressing the spike in violent crime that has occurred during the pandemic,” Garland told reporters. “Central to that strategy has been the importance of our partnerships, partnerships among federal law enforcement agencies who are assisting the fight against violent crime, partnerships with state and local law enforcement agencies tasked with protecting their local communities, and partnerships with the local communities themselves.” NEW JERSEY MAN FACES CHARGES AFTER ALLEGEDLY ATTEMPTING TO AID MILITANT ISLAMIST GROUP Garland said in the final months of last year, the Justice Department has “investigated and charged individuals with making violent threats against FBI agents, federal judges, including a Supreme Court justice, presidential candidates, members of Congress, members of the military and election workers. “Just this week, several bomb threats were made against courthouses across the country. U.S. Marshals Service, FBI and our state and local partners are aggressively investigating those bomb threats, which constitute serious offenses,” Garland added. “And just yesterday, we arrested and charged an individual with threatening to kill a member of Congress and his children.” Garland also spoke about the upcoming anniversary of the January 6 protests and said “we must never forget the terrible violence inflicted on law enforcement officers” on that day.

Trump campaign to hold ‘Iowa Faith Event’ with Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Mike Huckabee ahead of caucus
Former President Trump will be holding an Iowa faith event with two Arkansas governors ahead of the state’s Republican presidential caucuses next week. Trump will be joining GOP Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders and former Diamond State Governor Mike Huckabee, a Republican, for the Hawkeye State faith event on January 8, Fox News Digital has learned. Sanders told Fox News Digital she is “excited to head back to Iowa on Monday to campaign for President Trump, because we need his leadership back in the White House.” TRUMP STARTS 2024 IN ‘STRONGEST POSSIBLE POSITION’ IN REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY RACE “The contrast between President Biden’s disastrous policies and President Trump’s successful policies could not be more clear,” Sanders said. “President Trump made America great and will again.” The event will be held at the Hickory Grove Community Church in Ottumwa, Iowa, starting at 11 a.m. CT. The event comes as Trump holds a commanding lead in the GOP presidential primary ahead of the January 15 caucus in Iowa. Trump is heavily ahead of his competition in the polls for the GOP nominaton and is touting his position as the presidential nominating cycle kicks off. “I am honored to tell you that we are beginning the 2024 Election Year in our strongest possible position since the moment I rode down the Golden Escalator and announced my bid to run for president as a political outsider,” Trump wrote in a New Year’s Day fundraising email to supporters, as he pointed back to the launch of his 2016 presidential campaign. For Trump, a year makes a big difference. The former president was the only Republican running for the White House as 2023 kicked off and was quickly joined by a chorus of GOP presidential hopefuls, including his former protégé, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. DeSantis was neck and neck with Trump early on in the race as more people threw their hats into the ring, including former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy and former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. Trump enjoys a formidable double-digit lead over his rivals in the latest polls in Iowa, where the January 15 caucuses lead off the GOP nominating calendar. He holds an even larger lead in the most recent national polls. The former president is also facing legal trouble amid his third straight White House bid, but it only seems to have had a rallying effect among many Republicans. Claudia Tenney endorsed former President Trump on Friday, telling Fox News Digital that he is “the only candidate” who can restore the United States to “prosperity and security.” Tenney, R-N.Y., told Fox News Digital on Friday that during his first term, Trump’s “visionary and bold leadership secured the border, put our economy in overdrive by lowering taxes, cutting unnecessary regulations and unleashing American energy independence.” TRUMP WINS ENDORSEMENT FROM HOUSE MAJORITY LEADER STEVE SCALISE “President Trump provided us with safer communities and global stability,” Tenney said. In contrast, Tenney described President Biden’s tenure as “pathetic and feckless.” “Illegal migrants are flooding our communities, crime is rampant and unchecked, Bidenflation is crushing families and dangerous and costly wars are breaking out across the globe,” Tenney said. HOUSE GOP LEADERS CLOSE RANKS AROUND TRUMP AS NO. 3 REPUBLICAN REVEALS 2024 SUPPORT “President Trump is the only candidate who can make America great again by restoring our country to the prosperity and security we enjoyed under his strong leadership,” Tenney told Fox News Digital. “I am honored to once again endorse President Trump and support his campaign for President of the United States.” Tenney added: “We must fight every day to ensure election integrity in order to secure a resounding win for President Trump and all Republicans in 2024.” STEFANIK ENDORSES TRUMP FOR PRESIDENT IN 2024, AS SOME PUSH HIM TO DELAY ANNOUNCEMENT Tenney joins nearly 100 House Republicans in endorsing Trump, who holds a commanding lead over the Republican primary field. Tenney is the second member of Congress from New York to endorse Trump. House Republican Conference chairwoman Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., was the first member of congressional GOP leadership to endorse Trump’s campaign in November. House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., endorsed Trump just days later. This week, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., and House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, R-Minn., endorsed Trump as well. On the other side of the Capitol, Trump has the support of nearly two dozen Republican senators.
